Everything about personalised gifts in one place: how names get onto things, what lasts, what it costs, ideas for every person and occasion, and how to order without regrets.

The short answer
- A personalised gift carries something that identifies one person: a name, initials, a date, a photograph or a few words.
- There are six common ways to personalise: embroidery, printing, engraving, resin, hand-painting and hand-lettering. Embroidery and engraving last longest.
- Prices start at about ₹199 for a handkerchief with an initial and reach ₹1,500 and more for clocks, collage frames and hampers.
- Short wording works best. A name and a date age better than a quote.
- Order 10 to 12 days ahead, and three weeks before Diwali, Raksha Bandhan and Valentine's Day. Always check the proof letter by letter.
Search for personalised gifts in India and you get ten thousand products and no help choosing between them. A mug with a photo, a keychain with a name, a clock with a surname: they look alike on a screen and are very different things once they arrive.
We make personalised gifts by hand, and this is the guide we would give a friend. It explains the ways a gift can be personalised and which of them last, what things cost and why, what to give to whom, and how to order online without the usual regrets. It also links to our more detailed guides for each festival and budget, so you can go deeper on the part you need.
What is a personalised gift?
A personalised gift is an object finished with something that identifies one person: a name, initials, a date, a photograph or a short line of words. It is made after you order it, for that one recipient, which is why it cannot be dispatched the same day or returned like a ready-made product.
In India the words personalised and customised are used for the same thing, and you will see both spellings, with an s and with a z. If there is a difference, it is this. Customised means you chose from options the maker offers: a colour, a size, a font. Personalised means the piece carries something that belongs to one person. A blue cap is customised. A blue cap that says Kabir is personalised.
How are gifts personalised?
There are six common ways to put a name or a picture on a gift: embroidery, printing, engraving, resin work, hand-painting and hand-lettering. They differ in what they suit, how long they last and what they cost. Knowing which one a product uses tells you more than its photograph does.
| Method | How it is done | Best on | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Embroidery | Thread stitched into fabric, by hand or machine | Caps, handkerchiefs, T-shirts, towels | Years. It outlasts the fabric if washed gently. |
| Printing | Ink or a heat-pressed film on the surface | T-shirts, mugs, photo frames, cushions | Good prints last years; cheap ones crack or fade with washing. |
| Engraving | The surface is cut, by laser or by hand | Wood, metal, acrylic, leather | Permanent. It cannot wash or rub off. |
| Resin | Letters, flowers or glitter set in clear resin | Keychains, coasters, trays, clocks | Years, if kept out of long direct sun. |
| Hand-painting | Painted with a brush, then sealed | Nameplates, clocks, wooden boxes, pots | Years indoors; needs sealing for outdoor use. |
| Hand-lettering | A name or message written by a calligrapher | Cards, frames, tags, envelopes | As long as the paper is kept dry and framed. |
Two questions to ask about any personalised product. First, is the name part of the object or sitting on top of it? Embroidery, engraving and resin are part of the object. A sticker or a thin print is on top, and can peel. Second, was it done by hand or by machine? Neither is wrong. Machine work is even and cheaper. Hand work varies slightly from piece to piece, and that variation is what you are paying for.
What can be personalised?
Almost anything with a flat or soft surface. The pieces that work best as gifts are the ones a person uses or sees every day, because the name is noticed each time.
| Kind of gift | What goes on it | Usual price range | Used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name keychain | A name, initials or a date | ₹249 to ₹449 | Every day |
| Handkerchief | One to three initials | ₹199 to ₹349 | Every day |
| Cap | A name, nickname or number | ₹449 to ₹699 | Weekly |
| T-shirt | A name, a line or a photo | ₹449 to ₹899 | Weekly |
| Photo frame | A photo, with names or a date | ₹349 to ₹1,499 | Seen daily |
| Wall clock | A family name or a wedding date | ₹899 to ₹1,499 | Seen daily |
| Nameplate | A surname or first names | ₹699 to ₹1,800 | Seen daily |
| Everlasting bouquet | A tag with a name or date | ₹599 to ₹1,299 | Seen daily |
| Hamper | A name on one or two pieces | ₹499 to ₹2,000 | Varies |
The prices are what a handmade piece of each kind usually costs in India, to help you plan a budget. They are not a quote. You can see what is available now in pieces that can carry a name.
Personalised gift ideas by person
Start with the person, not the product. Ask what they carry every day, what they keep on display, and what only the two of you would understand. The answers narrow the choice faster than scrolling does.
- For your wife or girlfriend: an everlasting bouquet with a date tag, a keychain with her name, a frame with a photograph she likes of herself. See Karwa Chauth gift ideas for your wife for sixteen ideas by budget.
- For your husband or boyfriend: a keychain for the bike or car, a cap with one word on it, handkerchiefs with his initials. Men tend to buy what they need, so the personal detail is the whole gift.
- For a brother or sister: the nickname only the family uses, on something they carry. Our Bhai Dooj gift ideas has thirty for both.
- For parents: anything with the family on it. A wall clock with the surname, a frame with the grandchildren's names, a nameplate for the door.
- For a friend: an initial keychain, matching caps for the group, a T-shirt with an inside joke.
- For a child: a first-name keychain for the school bag, a T-shirt a size up. First names only, for safety.
- For a colleague or a team: one design with a different name on each piece. See Diwali corporate gifts under ₹500.
- For a couple: both names and the wedding date on a clock or a frame. It suits weddings, anniversaries and housewarmings alike.
Personalised gifts by occasion
The occasion decides how personal and how visible the gift should be. A birthday gift can be playful. A wedding gift will be seen by two families. A festival gift is often one of many, so a name is what sets it apart.

Personalised gifts by budget
A name does more for a small budget than for a large one. A ₹300 keychain with a name on it is kept. A ₹300 box of assorted things is forgotten. Set the budget first, then pick one piece from the band.
- Under ₹300: a handkerchief with an initial, an initial keychain, a mini flower bunch with a name tag.
- ₹300 to ₹500: a resin name keychain, a small photo frame, a cap in a simple design. Browse gifts under ₹500.
- ₹500 to ₹1,000: a custom T-shirt, an embroidered cap, an everlasting bouquet, a pair of keychains.
- ₹1,000 to ₹2,000: a wall clock with a family name, a collage frame, a nameplate, a hamper you put together.
- Above ₹2,000: two or three pieces that go together, such as a clock and matching frames for a new home.
What should you write on a personalised gift?
Write as little as possible. A name, a pair of initials or a date nearly always ages better than a message. The shorter the wording, the larger and clearer the letters, and the less there is to get wrong.
- Use the name they answer to. A nickname at home, a first name at the office. Not the name on their passport.
- Dates in numbers. 14.02.2026 fits anywhere. Fourteenth of February does not.
- Skip the long quote. Tastes change, and long text is set small.
- Match the wording to who will see it. A keychain is private. A wall clock in the living room is read by every guest.
- Check names in other scripts. If the name is to be in Devanagari, Tamil or another script, type it yourself in that script and ask for a proof.
How do you order a personalised gift online?
Ordering has five steps: choose the piece, type the wording, check the design proof, wait while it is made, and receive it. The proof is the step that protects you, because a studio makes the piece only after you approve it, and what you approve is what you get.
- Choose the piece and its options: colour, size, font.
- Type the wording exactly, with capitals and punctuation as you want them. Do not send a screenshot.
- Send photographs at full size, not forwarded from a chat, which shrinks them.
- Check the proof letter by letter. Read it aloud. Ask someone else to read it.
- Give an address and a phone number that will be answered, and add gift wrap and a note if it is going straight to the person.
Allow 10 to 12 days from order to doorstep, and three weeks before Diwali, Raksha Bandhan and Valentine's Day. Our festival gifting calendar lists the order-by date for every occasion in the year, and you can see how our orders work on the home page.
How do you choose where to buy?
Large marketplaces, gifting websites and small studios all sell personalised gifts. The difference is in who makes the piece and whether you can talk to them. These are the checks worth making before you pay anyone.
- Do they show a proof before making? If not, a spelling mistake is yours to live with.
- Are the photographs of real pieces? Look for the same product photographed more than once, in ordinary light, with different names on it.
- Is the method stated? Embroidered, printed, engraved or resin. If the listing does not say, ask.
- Is the making time honest? Same-day dispatch and made-to-order do not go together.
- Is there a clear policy for mistakes? A good seller remakes a piece that differs from the approved proof, and says so in writing.
- Can you reach a person? A contact form, an email address or a WhatsApp number that someone answers.
Can personalised gifts be returned?
Usually not, if the piece was made as you approved it. A gift with someone's name on it cannot be sold to anyone else, so sellers across India exclude personalised items from ordinary returns. You are covered when the fault is theirs: a piece that arrives damaged, or that differs from the proof you approved, should be remade or refunded.
That is why the proof matters so much. Photograph the parcel and the piece before you throw away the packaging, and report any problem within 48 hours. Our own terms are on the returns and refunds page.
How do you care for personalised gifts?
- Embroidered fabric: wash cold, inside out, and do not wring. Iron on the reverse.
- Printed T-shirts: wash inside out in cold water and never iron directly on the print.
- Resin: keep out of long hours of direct sun and away from heat, which can yellow clear resin. Wipe with a soft dry cloth.
- Engraved wood: keep dry and dust with a soft cloth. A little wood oil once a year keeps it from drying out.
- Frames and clocks: hang away from damp walls and direct sun, which fades photographs.
- Artificial flowers: dust with a soft brush or a hairdryer on its cool setting.
The mistakes people make most often
- Ordering too late. A made-to-order gift ordered three days before the day arrives after it.
- Approving the proof without reading it. Most spelling mistakes are in the customer's own message and are missed twice.
- Too much text. A name, a quote, a date and a photo on one piece looks crowded.
- A photo forwarded on WhatsApp. It looks fine on a phone and prints blurry.
- Guessing a size. For clothing, check one they already wear.
- Choosing what you like. The gift is for them. If she never wears red, do not choose red.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between personalised and customised gifts?
The two words are used for the same thing in India. Where a difference is made, customised means you chose from options such as colour, size or font, and personalised means the piece carries something that identifies one person, such as a name, a date or a photograph.
What are the best personalised gifts in India?
The best are things a person uses or sees every day: a keychain with their name, a handkerchief with initials, an embroidered cap, a photo frame or a wall clock with a family name. Useful objects with one personal detail are kept far longer than novelty items.
How much do personalised gifts cost?
Handmade personalised gifts in India start at about ₹199 for a handkerchief with an initial. Name keychains cost ₹249 to ₹449, caps and T-shirts ₹449 to ₹899, and wall clocks, collage frames and nameplates ₹699 to ₹1,800. Prices depend on the method and the size.
How long does a personalised gift take to arrive?
Allow 10 to 12 days: one or two days for the design proof, three to five working days of making and three to five for delivery. Before Diwali, Raksha Bandhan and Valentine's Day, order three weeks ahead, because makers and couriers are at their busiest.
Which lasts longer, embroidery or printing?
Embroidery lasts longer. Stitched thread is part of the fabric and usually outlasts it, where a print sits on the surface and can crack or fade with repeated washing. Printing is better for photographs and fine detail, which thread cannot reproduce.
Can I return a personalised gift?
Generally not, if it was made as you approved it, because it cannot be sold to anyone else. You should get a remake or a refund if it arrives damaged or differs from the approved proof. Check the proof carefully and report problems within 48 hours.
