Thirty Bhai Dooj gifts for brothers and sisters, sorted by budget, with the reason each one works. Plus what to do when your sibling lives in another city.
Part of our guide: Festival Gifting Calendar for India 2026–27: Dates and Deadlines

The short answer
- Bhai Dooj is on Wednesday 11 November 2026, three days after Diwali. Some regions observe it on 10 November.
- For a brother under ₹500: a name keychain, an initial handkerchief or a small frame with a childhood photo.
- For a sister under ₹500: a name keychain with pressed flowers, a mini flower bunch or handmade earrings.
- Order a personalised gift by Wednesday 21 October. Couriers are at their slowest in Diwali week.
- If your sibling is in another city, send the gift to arrive before Diwali, not on the day.
Bhai Dooj arrives when everyone is tired. Diwali was three days ago, the sweets are half finished and the budget is spent. And then you remember you still need Bhai Dooj gift ideas for a brother who says he wants nothing, or a sister who already has everything.
The 30 ideas below are split between brothers and sisters and sorted by budget, each with a price range and one line on why it works. Some are pieces we make, and we say so. The rest are things to look for elsewhere. There is also a section for siblings in different cities, which is most siblings now.
When is Bhai Dooj in 2026, and when should you order?
Bhai Dooj is on Wednesday 11 November 2026, the second day of the bright fortnight of Kartik and the last day of the five-day Diwali festival. Some regions and panchangs mark it on Tuesday 10 November. For a personalised handmade gift, order by Wednesday 21 October.
| What you are ordering | Order by | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A personalised piece, sent to another city | Sunday 18 October | It should arrive before Diwali week, when couriers are slowest. |
| A personalised piece, delivered to you | Wednesday 21 October | Three weeks: a proof, a few working days of making, festival delivery. |
| Handmade, not personalised | Friday 30 October | No proof is needed, but the last week is risky. |
| Anything after 4 November | Buy locally | Carry it yourself and write the note by hand. |
The tilak is usually done in the afternoon, and the exact muhurat differs by city. Check your local panchang for the date your family follows and for the timing.
What is Bhai Dooj, and who gives the gift?
Bhai Dooj is the day a sister applies a tilak to her brother's forehead, performs his aarti and prays for his long life. He gives her a gift in return. Traditionally the gift goes from brother to sister. Today most siblings exchange gifts both ways.
The festival has different names across the country: Bhau Beej in Maharashtra and Goa, Bhai Phonta in Bengal, Bhai Tika in Nepal, and Yama Dwitiya in the older texts. The story behind it is that Yama, the god of death, visited his sister Yamuna on this day. She welcomed him with a tilak and a meal, and he granted that any brother who receives a tilak from his sister on this day would be blessed with a long life.
It is often compared with Raksha Bandhan. The difference is simple. On Rakhi the sister ties a thread and the brother promises to protect her. On Bhai Dooj there is no thread: she applies a tilak, usually feeds him a meal she has cooked, and the day is about his well-being.
How to choose a Bhai Dooj gift
Choose something your sibling will use every day, and add one detail from your shared childhood: a nickname, an old photo, a family joke. A sibling is the one person you have known all your life, and the gift should prove it. Price matters far less.
- Use the name you actually call them. Nobody calls their brother by his full name. Chintu, Bhai, Dada, Didi, Chhoti: that is what goes on the gift.
- Think about where they are in life. A first job, a new city, a new baby, a new bike. A gift that fits this year is better than one that would fit any year.
- Do not repeat Rakhi. If you gave a wallet in August, do not give a belt in November.
- Keep it small after Diwali. They have just received a week of gifts. One thoughtful thing is enough.
- Decide early if it has to travel. A parcel sent on 5 November will not arrive by the 11th.
Bhai Dooj gifts for brother under ₹500
Brothers are hard to buy for because they buy what they need and say they want nothing else. A small gift with his name on it gets round that.
1. A resin keychain with his nickname
₹299 to ₹449 · Best for: a brother with a new bike, car or flat. Resin is poured by hand and no two pieces come out alike. Put the nickname only the family uses. He will complain, and he will use it. We make this.
2. A handkerchief with his initials
₹199 to ₹349 · Best for: an elder brother with an office job. Two or three embroidered initials on white or pale blue cotton. It is the kind of thing he would never buy for himself. We make this.
3. A small frame with a childhood photo
₹349 to ₹549 · Best for: a brother who has moved away. The worst photo of the two of you that your mother still has. Scan it properly; do not photograph the album with your phone. We make this.
4. A desk plant in a hand-painted pot
₹300 to ₹480 · Best for: a brother who works from home. A jade plant or a snake plant, both of which survive neglect. Hand it over in person.

7. A T-shirt with a family joke
₹499 to ₹899 · Best for: the brother closest to you in age. The line your father always says, or the name of the family group chat. Check his size from a shirt he already wears. We make this.
8. A pair of keychains, one for each of you
₹549 to ₹799 for two · Best for: siblings in different cities. The same design, each with the other's name or your shared surname. A small thing in your pocket that the other one has too. We make this.

13. A box you put together yourself
₹1,000 to ₹1,800 · Best for: when one thing is not enough. A keychain with his name, a cap, his favourite namkeen and a handwritten note. Four things chosen by you beat a ready-made hamper.
Bhai Dooj gifts for sister under ₹500
Traditionally this is the gift of the day: the brother's thank-you after the tilak. An envelope of cash is the default. Add one small thing to the envelope and it becomes a gift.
14. A resin keychain with pressed flowers and her name
₹299 to ₹449 · Best for: every sister. Real pressed flowers set in clear resin, with her name. Use Didi or Chhoti if that is what you call her. We make this.
15. A mini everlasting flower bunch

20. A frame with a photo of the two of you

Gifts for sister above ₹1,000

₹899 to ₹1,499 · Best for: a milestone year: her wedding, her first job, her move abroad. One photo from each decade of your lives. We make this.
25. A wall clock for her new home
₹899 to ₹1,499 · Best for: a sister who has just set up a home. Her family's name on the dial. Every time she checks the time, it is from her brother. We make this.

27. A box you put together yourself
₹1,000 to ₹2,000 · Best for: making up for a forgotten birthday. A keychain with her name, a small bouquet, her favourite chocolate and a note. Put the cash envelope inside too.
Bhai Dooj gifts for little brothers and sisters
When the siblings are children, parents buy the gifts, and both children should get one. Otherwise the tilak ends in tears.
28. Matching name keychains for their school bags
₹299 to ₹399 each · Best for: ages 5 to 12. The same design in two colours, each with a first name. It also ends the argument over whose bag is whose. We make this.
29. Matching T-shirts
₹449 to ₹699 each · Best for: the Bhai Dooj photograph. "Big brother" and "Little sister", or simply their names. Buy one size up. We make this.
30. A craft kit to do together
₹250 to ₹600 · Best for: keeping them busy on a holiday afternoon. A diya-painting or clay kit that both can use. You can also make one up yourself from a stationery shop.
How do you celebrate Bhai Dooj when your sibling is in another city?
Send the gift early, plan a video call for the afternoon of the 11th, and include a tilak in the parcel. Many sisters now post a small packet of roli and rice with a note, and the brother applies it himself on the call while she does the aarti on screen.
- Order by 18 October so the parcel travels before Diwali week.
- Send it to where they will be on the day. If your brother goes home for Diwali, send it there, not to his flat in Bengaluru.
- Give the courier a phone number that will be answered.
- Add a handwritten note. Ask the studio to include one if you cannot write it yourself.
- Fix the call time in advance. Wednesday is a working day for many people. Lunch break is the usual slot.
What should you write on a Bhai Dooj gift?
Write the name you call them, and nothing more. Sibling gifts work best when they are short and slightly embarrassing. A long emotional message on the object itself is not how most brothers and sisters talk to each other. Save the emotion for the note.
| Piece | What fits | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Keychain | A nickname | Chintu, Didi, Chhoti |
| Cap | One word | Bhai, Dada, Captain |
| Handkerchief | Initials | R.S. |
| Photo frame | A year or a place | Lucknow, 2004 |
| T-shirt | A family line of two to four words | Ask Mummy first |
| Note in the box | Two honest lines, by hand | Still my favourite person to fight with. |
Type the wording exactly as it should appear, and check the design proof before you approve it. Our guide to choosing a personalised handmade gift covers proofs and wording in more detail.
What to skip
- The same thing you gave at Rakhi. They will notice.
- Only cash, with nothing else. It is welcome, but it is forgotten by evening. Add one small thing.
- Leftover Diwali sweets in a new box. Everyone can tell.
- Clothes in a guessed size. A wrong size is an errand, not a gift.
- A parcel sent in Diwali week. It will arrive after the 11th. Buy locally if you are late.

Questions people ask
When is Bhai Dooj in 2026?
Bhai Dooj is on Wednesday 11 November 2026, three days after Diwali on 8 November. Some regions and panchangs observe it on Tuesday 10 November. The tilak is usually done in the afternoon; check your local panchang for the date and muhurat your family follows.
What is the best Bhai Dooj gift for a brother?
Give something he uses every day with his name or nickname on it: a resin keychain, an embroidered cap, a handkerchief with his initials or a frame with a childhood photo. Brothers tend to buy what they need themselves, so a personal detail matters more than the price.
What should a brother give his sister on Bhai Dooj?
Traditionally a brother gives his sister a gift, often money, after she applies the tilak. Add one personal thing to the envelope: a keychain with her name, an everlasting bouquet, handmade earrings or a framed photo of the two of you.
What is a good Bhai Dooj gift under ₹500?
Under ₹500, choose a resin name keychain, a handkerchief with embroidered initials, a mini everlasting flower bunch, handmade earrings or a small photo frame. Each costs between about ₹199 and ₹499, and most can carry a name or a nickname.
What is the difference between Bhai Dooj and Raksha Bandhan?
On Raksha Bandhan, in the month of Shravan, a sister ties a rakhi on her brother's wrist. On Bhai Dooj, at the end of Diwali, there is no thread: she applies a tilak to his forehead, performs his aarti and usually cooks him a meal. Both end with gifts.
How can I send a Bhai Dooj gift to another city?
Order by about 18 October so the parcel travels before Diwali week, and send it to the address where your sibling will be on 11 November. Add gift wrap, a handwritten note and a phone number that will be answered. Then plan a video call for the tilak.
Want their nickname on it by Bhai Dooj?
Browse the pieces that can carry a name, and see the design proof before we make yours. Order by 21 October.
