Forty handmade Diwali gifts sorted by who you are buying for, each with a price range and the reason it works. Plus the dates to order by, because handmade takes time.

Part of our guide: Festival Gifting Calendar for India 2026–27: Dates and Deadlines

The short answer

  • Diwali is on Sunday 8 November 2026 and Dhanteras on Friday 6 November. Order personalised handmade gifts by Sunday 18 October.
  • Under ₹500: a name keychain, an initial handkerchief, a pair of hand-painted diyas or a small artificial flower bunch.
  • ₹500 to ₹1,000: a custom cap or T-shirt, a photo frame, an everlasting bouquet or a small hamper.
  • Above ₹1,000: a family-name wall clock, a photo collage frame or a door nameplate.
  • One name or one date on a useful object beats a bigger box of things nobody asked for.

Every Diwali the same boxes go round: dry fruits, a soan papdi tin, a set of glasses that goes straight into the cupboard. If you are looking for handmade Diwali gift ideas, you are probably trying to avoid adding one more of those to someone's shelf.

The 40 ideas below are sorted by who you are buying for. Each has a price range and one line on why it works. Some are pieces we make ourselves, and we say so. The rest are things to look for from other makers, at an exhibition or in your local market, because a good list should not stop at one shop's shelf.

When is Diwali 2026, and when should you order?

Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) is on Sunday 8 November 2026 and Dhanteras is on Friday 6 November. Bhai Dooj follows on 10 or 11 November, depending on your region. For a personalised handmade gift, order by Sunday 18 October. That leaves time for the design proof, the making and a courier network that slows down every festival week.

How to choose a handmade Diwali gift

A Diwali gift works when it is useful in the house it goes to and carries one detail that belongs to that family: a surname, a name, a date. Decide who it is for, set the budget, and then pick the object. Most people do it the other way round and end up with a pretty thing nobody needed.

  1. Start with the house, not the shop. Do they have bare walls or a full showcase? A pooja room? Children? A frame suits one home and clutters another.
  2. Fix the budget per person before you browse. Thirty relatives at ₹300 each is ₹9,000. Knowing the number first saves an evening of scrolling.
  3. Personalise one thing only. A surname on a clock or a name on a keychain is enough. A name, a photo, a quote and a date on the same piece looks crowded.
  4. Think about who will see it. A gift for your boss or your in-laws should be neutral: initials or a family name, not a nickname.
  5. Check the date. If it cannot arrive before Dhanteras, choose something else or buy it locally.

If you want the longer version of this, with what to write on each piece and how proofs work, read our guide to choosing a personalised handmade gift.

Handmade Diwali gifts for parents and elders

Parents rarely want more things. What they keep is anything with the family on it. These six stay out on the wall or the table instead of going into a cupboard.

1. A wall clock with the family name

₹899 to ₹1,499 · Best for: parents, in-laws, a new home. Everyone in the house looks at it several times a day, and a surname or "The Sharmas, est. 1994" makes it theirs. Ask for a silent movement if it is going in a bedroom. We make this.

2. A family photo frame with names and a date

₹699 to ₹1,299 · Best for: grandparents. Pick one good photo from the year, not a collage of twelve. Add the names or the occasion underneath. Send the photo at full size, because a picture forwarded on WhatsApp prints blurry. We make this.

3. A set of hand-painted diyas

₹199 to ₹499 · Best for: anyone, and the safest gift on this list. Terracotta diyas painted by hand get used that very evening. Buy them from a local potter or a craft stall, and choose a set of six or more so they can line a doorway.

4. A hand-decorated pooja thali

₹499 to ₹1,200 · Best for: mothers and mothers-in-law. A thali decorated with kundan work or hand painting is used for Lakshmi Puja, then for Bhai Dooj three days later. Check that the decoration is fixed firmly, since it will be handled with oil and kumkum.

5. An everlasting flower arrangement

₹499 to ₹999 · Best for: the pooja room or the showcase. Fresh marigolds are finished in two days. A good artificial arrangement in marigold, rose or mogra colours looks right through the wedding season that follows Diwali. We make this.

6. A set of handkerchiefs with embroidered initials

₹249 to ₹449 · Best for: fathers and grandfathers who still carry one. Initials stitched in one corner turn an everyday object into his own. Cotton, white or pale blue, and no more than three letters. We make this.

Diwali gifts for siblings and cousins

With Bhai Dooj two or three days after Diwali, one gift often has to do for both. Choose something a brother or sister will carry or wear, not something to display.

7. A resin name keychain

₹299 to ₹449 · Best for: the sibling with a new scooter, a new flat or a first job. Resin is poured in layers and left to cure, so no two are the same. Use the name the family calls them at home, not the one on their Aadhaar card. We make this.

8. A cap with a nickname

₹499 to ₹699 · Best for: a brother who lives in caps. Embroidery lasts longer than print on a cap, because it does not crack in the sun. Keep it to one word. We make this.

9. A custom T-shirt

₹499 to ₹899 · Best for: cousins of the same age. An inside joke, the name of the family WhatsApp group, or matching shirts for the Diwali photo. Ask for their size quietly, or ask their mother. We make this.

10. A small desk photo frame

₹349 to ₹549 · Best for: a sibling who has moved to another city. A childhood photo of the two of you, small enough for a hostel shelf or an office desk. It also posts easily. We make this.

11. Hand-poured scented candles

₹299 to ₹699 · Best for: a sister with her own room or flat. Soy or beeswax candles from a small maker burn cleaner than the mass-produced kind. Choose a mild scent such as sandalwood or jasmine. Strong perfume gives people headaches.

12. A box of handmade chocolates

₹300 to ₹800 · Best for: when you truly do not know what they want. Home chocolatiers in most cities take Diwali orders. Ask when the box was made and how long it keeps, and avoid posting chocolate to a hot city.

Diwali gifts for your wife, husband or partner

This is the one gift that should not be practical only. It should say you noticed something. If you are also buying for Karwa Chauth on 29 October, our Karwa Chauth gift ideas for your wife are sorted by budget.

13. An everlasting bouquet

₹599 to ₹1,299 · Best for: a first Diwali together. Ribbon or fabric roses in her favourite colour stay on the dresser for years. Fresh flowers are lovely for one evening. We make this.

14. A pair of keychains with both names

₹549 to ₹799 for two · Best for: couples with a new home or a new car. One for each set of keys. Add the date you moved in instead of a second name if you want something quieter. We make this.

15. A photo collage frame of your year

₹899 to ₹1,499 · Best for: couples who take plenty of photos and print none. Four to six pictures from the past twelve months, in the order they happened. It takes an evening to choose them, and that effort is part of the gift. We make this.

16. Handmade jewellery

₹250 to ₹900 · Best for: someone who wears jhumkas every day. Terracotta, thread or beadwork earrings from an independent maker cost less than a restaurant dinner and get worn through the festive week. Look at what colours she already owns first.

17. A hand block-printed stole or dupatta

₹600 to ₹1,500 · Best for: when you want to give clothing without guessing a size. Block prints from Jaipur, Bagru or Ajrakhpur are each stamped by hand. Small misalignments in the pattern are the sign that it is genuine.

Diwali gifts for friends

For friends, keep it small and personal. A ₹300 gift with their name on it is remembered longer than a ₹1,000 box of assorted things.

18. An initial keychain

₹249 to ₹349 · Best for: a group of friends where everyone gets one. A single letter with pressed flowers or a colour each person picks. Order them together so they match. We make this.

19. A set of handmade soaps

₹250 to ₹600 · Best for: the friend who loves skincare. Cold-process soaps from small makers list every ingredient. Avoid anything with a medical claim on the label, and choose mild scents.

20. A macramé plant hanger

₹300 to ₹700 · Best for: a friend with a balcony. Knotted by hand from cotton cord, it weighs almost nothing and posts in an envelope. Add a note saying which plant you would hang in it.

21. A hand-painted planter with a plant in it

₹350 to ₹800 · Best for: a friend who has just moved house. A terracotta pot painted by hand, with a money plant or a jade plant already growing. Carry it over yourself. Plants and couriers do not get along.

22. Matching caps for the group

₹499 to ₹699 each · Best for: college friends planning a trip after Diwali. The group's name on the front, each person's name on the side. One artwork, several caps, so the proof is quick. We make this.

Handmade gifts for the home and for hosts

If you are visiting someone's home for a card party or a Diwali dinner, bring something they can put up the same evening.

23. A handmade toran

₹250 to ₹900 · Best for: every host. A toran or bandhanwar of beads, fabric or shells hangs over the main door on Diwali morning. Measure nothing: most are made for a standard 3-foot door and can be tied shorter.

24. Reusable marigold garlands

₹150 to ₹500 · Best for: flats with a balcony railing or a staircase. Artificial genda strings look fresh for the full five days and come out again next year. Fresh ones are still best for the puja itself. We make this.

25. A handmade showcase piece

₹499 to ₹1,499 · Best for: homes with a glass cabinet in the living room. One well-made piece is better than three small ones. Ask the size before you order, and check it fits a shelf about 10 inches high. We make this.

26. Hand-painted tealight holders

₹250 to ₹700 · Best for: hosts with small children or pets, who avoid open diyas on the floor. Glass or metal holders painted by hand keep the flame enclosed. Buy them in fours.

27. A reusable rangoli

₹300 to ₹900 · Best for: working couples with no time on Diwali morning. A rangoli made on a wooden or acrylic base, decorated with kundan and beads, is laid at the door in a minute and stored flat afterwards.

28. A handmade nameplate for the door

₹699 to ₹1,800 · Best for: a family in a new flat. Painted or resin-finished, with the surname or everyone's first names. Confirm the spelling with the family in writing. A nameplate with a mistake cannot be given.

Diwali gifts for children

Children get sweets and cash from everyone. A gift with their own name on it is the one they show their friends.

29. A name keychain for the school bag

₹299 to ₹399 · Best for: ages 5 to 12. It also solves a real problem: every bag in the class looks the same. Use the first name only, for safety. We make this.

30. A T-shirt with their name

₹449 to ₹699 · Best for: siblings or cousins who want to match. Buy one size up. Children grow, and festival clothes get worn again at the next birthday. We make this.

31. A diya-painting kit

₹200 to ₹500 · Best for: keeping children busy on Diwali afternoon. Plain terracotta diyas, paints and brushes. You can also put one together yourself from a stationery shop and a potter for under ₹200.

32. A crochet or cloth toy

₹350 to ₹900 · Best for: babies and toddlers. Handmade amigurumi animals have stitched eyes and no small plastic parts. Ask the maker whether it can be washed.

Diwali gifts for colleagues, clients and teams

Office gifting has two rules: everyone gets the same thing, and nothing should be too personal. A name is the right amount. For the planning side (budgets, GST and timelines), see our guide to handcrafted corporate gifts in India.

33. A name keychain for each person

₹249 to ₹399 each · Best for: teams of 5 to 30. Same design, each with a different name. It costs less than a sweet box and nobody leaves it on their desk in January. Send the names in a typed list, not a photo of a sheet. We make this.

34. A desk frame with a team photo

₹349 to ₹549 each · Best for: a team that finished a hard project this year. One photo, the project name and the year. It works for a manager's gift to the team more than the other way round. We make this.

35. A small handmade hamper

₹499 to ₹999 each · Best for: clients. A pair of diyas, one personalised piece and a handwritten card, in a box. Three items are enough. A hamper with ten things in it reads as stock clearance. We make this.

36. A handkerchief with initials

₹199 to ₹349 each · Best for: a formal office, or senior colleagues. Small, useful, and easy to post to people who work from other cities. We make this.

37. Caps with the team name

₹499 to ₹699 each · Best for: sales and field teams, or the office cricket side. Agree on one colour that suits everyone. Navy and black are the safe choices. We make this.

For ten or more pieces, tell us the quantity, the budget per person and the date through the corporate gifting enquiry form, and we will tell you plainly what can still be made before Diwali.

Small gifts for neighbours, helpers and guests

These are the gifts you need ten of: for the neighbours, the building staff, your house help's family, and guests who come for the puja.

38. A pair of diyas in a small box

₹99 to ₹249 · Best for: puja guests and neighbours. Two decorated diyas with a wick each. Buy from a local potter in the weeks before Diwali, when the price is lowest and the choice is widest.

39. A handmade potli with dry fruits

₹150 to ₹400 · Best for: house help, drivers and security staff, along with their Diwali bonus and never in place of it. A cloth potli stitched by hand is reused long after the almonds are gone.

40. A mini artificial flower bunch

₹199 to ₹399 · Best for: elderly neighbours and teachers. A small bunch that needs no vase and no water, tied with a ribbon and a handwritten tag. We make this.

Diwali gift ideas by budget

If you are buying for many people, sort your list by budget first and then pick one idea from each band. This table puts the ideas above into four bands.

What to skip this Diwali

Some gifts are popular only because they are easy to buy. A few things we would leave out:

  • The photo mug. It is the gift everyone already has two of. If you want to use a photo, put it in a frame.
  • Oversized hampers. Half the contents are filler. Three good things beat ten forgettable ones.
  • Idols for someone else's pooja room. Families are particular about these, and many follow their own customs on what may be gifted. Ask first.
  • Anything with a long quote on it. Tastes change. A name and a date do not.
  • Rush personalisation. A piece made in a hurry without a proof is how spelling mistakes happen. If time is short, buy a non-personalised handmade gift and write the note by hand.

How to order a personalised Diwali gift

Ordering a made-to-order gift has four steps, and the second is the one people skip. A studio sends a design proof, which is a photo or mock-up of the wording and layout, and makes the piece only after you approve it.

  1. Send the details in text. Type the name exactly as it should appear, including capitals. Do not send a screenshot.
  2. Check the proof letter by letter. Read it aloud. Ask a second person to read it too.
  3. Give the delivery address and a phone number that someone will answer. During festival week, couriers do not try twice.
  4. Add gift wrap and a note if it is going straight to the person.

You can see how our orders work on the home page, browse pieces that can carry a name, or start with gifts under ₹500.

Questions people ask

What is a good handmade Diwali gift under ₹500?

A resin name keychain, a handkerchief with embroidered initials, a set of hand-painted diyas or a small desk photo frame all cost under ₹500. Each is useful, and the first, second and fourth can carry a name, which is what makes a small gift feel considered.

When should I order personalised Diwali gifts in 2026?

Diwali is on Sunday 8 November 2026. Order one or two personalised pieces by Sunday 18 October, and a set of 10 to 30 pieces by Monday 12 October. Made-to-order gifts need a design proof, a few working days of making and extra delivery time in festival week.

What can I gift instead of sweets and dry fruits on Diwali?

Give something the family will use or display: a wall clock with the family name, a photo frame, a handmade toran, hand-painted diyas or an everlasting flower arrangement. These last beyond the festival week, and a name or date makes them specific to that home.

What is a good Diwali gift for office colleagues?

Choose one item for everyone and personalise it with each person's name: a name keychain, a desk photo frame or a handkerchief with initials. Keep it neutral, useful and within ₹250 to ₹600 a person. For ten or more pieces, order at least four weeks ahead.

Are handmade gifts more expensive than ready-made ones?

Usually a little, because you are paying for a person's time, not a machine's. A handmade name keychain costs about ₹299 to ₹449, where a printed one may cost ₹150. In return you get a piece made for one person, checked by hand, that is not on every other shelf.

Is it all right to gift artificial flowers on Diwali?

Yes. Fresh marigolds are traditional for the puja and the doorway, and artificial flowers are a practical gift for decoration: garlands, a bouquet or an arrangement for the showcase. They stay fresh-looking for the five days of Diwali and can be used again the next year.

Want a name on it before Diwali?

Browse the pieces that can carry a name, and see the design proof before we make yours. Order by 18 October.
