The short answer

  • When a dad says he wants nothing, he means no clutter and no fuss. Give him something useful, personal or holding a memory, ideally all three.
  • Under ₹500: a keychain with his name for his scooter keys, a handkerchief with his initials or a small frame with one old photo.
  • ₹500 to ₹1,000: a cap for his morning walk, a customised T-shirt, an everlasting bouquet or a frame with his old address.
  • Above ₹1,000: a wall clock with the family name, a collage frame of his working life or a gift box you put together.
  • Order a personalised gift at least 10 to 12 days ahead. Father's Day 2027 falls on Sunday 20 June.

Looking for a gift for father when every year he says the same thing: I don't need anything, beta, don't waste money? Papa has his watch, his wallet, his two good shirts and his opinions, and none of them need replacing. So the gift gets left until the last day, and he gets another shirt.

The 30 ideas below are sorted by the kind of dad you have (retired, still working, always travelling, a cricket, news, garden or chai person, a new grandfather, a dad in another city), then by occasion and budget. A name, initials or an old address can go on many of these, and our complete guide to personalised gifts in India explains how.

What is a good gift for a father?

A good gift for a father fits into his ordinary day and carries one detail only the family would add: his name, the family name, his home town or a photo he has not seen in years. A keychain for his scooter keys, a cap for his morning walk, a frame or a wall clock all work. The detail matters more than the price.

Why dads say they want nothing

When a father says he needs nothing, he is telling the truth, just not all of it. Many Indian dads grew up spending on the family first and on themselves last, so being bought for feels awkward. And what he does need, he has already bought from the shop he has trusted for years.

So what he means is: do not spend a lot, and do not give me something I have to find space for. That is a useful brief. It leaves room for small things that are useful, carry his name and bring back a memory.

How to choose a gift for papa

Run each idea past three tests. A gift that passes two is good; one that passes all three gets talked about at the next family function.

  1. Is it useful? Does it fit a day he already lives: his walk, his drive to work, his chai on the balcony, his evening news?
  2. Is it personal? Does it carry his name, his initials, the family name, a date or a place that belongs to him?
  3. Does it hold a memory? An old photo, the address of the first house, the name of his village. Fathers rarely talk about the past, but they enjoy being reminded of it.

Gifts for a retired dad

A retired father has time, a routine and a lot of stories. Choose gifts that fit his new day and give him something to show visitors.

1. A cap with his name for the morning walk

Best for: the dad who is out at six with his walking group. His name, or what his friends call him, on a cap in a quiet colour. Keep it to one word.

2. A frame with the address of his first home

Best for: a father who often begins with when we lived in the old house. Just the address, the town and the years, in a clean frame. It starts a story every time someone asks.

3. A wall clock with the family name

Best for: a dad with no office clock to watch any more. The family surname, or his name and the year he retired, on the dial. It is a gift for the house as much as for him.

4. His old photos, scanned and put in order

Best for: the father with a trunk of fading prints. This one is DIY: scan the albums properly, label each photo with names and years, and frame the one he lingers over.

Gifts for a dad who is still working

A working father lives between home, the road and the office. Choose things he carries or sees every working day.

5. A keychain with his name or a family word

Best for: every working dad. His name, his initials or what the family calls him, on the keychain for his scooter, car or office keys.

6. A set of handkerchiefs with his initials

Best for: a dad who still keeps a hanky in his trouser pocket, which is most dads. Two initials in one corner, in a colour that goes with his office shirts. Useful and used every week.

7. A small desk frame with one family photo

Best for: a father with a desk or a shop counter. A recent photo of the whole family, small enough to sit beside his computer. Choose one in which everyone, including Mummy, looks good.

8. A customised T-shirt for his day off

Best for: a dad who owns only office shirts. A comfortable T-shirt with a short line the family will smile at, such as Papa's rules apply. Check his size from a shirt he already wears.

Gifts for a dad who travels

Some fathers are always on a train to a site, a client or a relative's wedding. Give him things that pack flat and remind him of home.

9. A cap with the name of his home town

Best for: the dad who has lived in three cities but still calls one of them home. Nashik, Kanpur or Kozhikode: one word on a cap he wears on every trip.

10. A name keychain for his bag

Best for: a dad whose black suitcase looks like every other one on the belt. His name on a keychain clipped to the handle.

11. A leather travel pouch from a leather maker

Best for: the father who carries tickets, ID and medicines in a plastic packet. Look for a small leather worker who can stamp his initials on a pouch. It ages well.

Gifts for father by what he loves

The quickest way to a personal gift is to start from his hobby. Here are ideas for cricket, the news, the garden and chai.

If he never misses a match

12. A cap in his team's colours with his name

Best for: the dad who argues with the umpire through the screen. The colours he cheers for, with his own name on it. Skip official team logos; his name means more anyway.

13. A frame from a match he remembers

Best for: a father who still talks about a match from decades ago. The date, the two teams and the line he always says about it, framed.

If he reads the newspaper front to back

14. A small wall clock for his reading corner

Best for: the dad with a fixed chair and a fixed time for the paper. A small clock that says Papa's corner, hung where he sits.

If he lives in the garden

15. An everlasting bouquet in his favourite flower colour

Best for: a father who grows marigolds on the terrace and is rarely given flowers himself. Everlasting flowers need no water, so they sit indoors while the real ones grow outside.

16. Good garden tools from a hardware shop

Best for: the dad still using the trowel with the broken handle. Buy sturdy secateurs or a hand fork from a local hardware shop and tie a tag with his name to the handle.

If he cannot start the day without chai

17. Tea from a small estate, with a note

Best for: the father with firm views on Assam versus Darjeeling. Buy loose-leaf tea from a small grower, in the kind he already drinks, with one line in your handwriting on the tag.

18. A pair of handmade cups from a local potter

Best for: the dad who has his evening chai with Mummy on the balcony. Two handmade cups, one for each of them. Many potters will scratch initials into the base if you ask in advance.

Gifts for a new grandfather

Becoming Dadu or Nanu softens even the strictest father. Gifts that put him and the baby together get shown to every visitor.

19. A frame with his first photo holding the baby

Best for: every new grandfather. That first photo, with the baby's name and date of birth below it. It will be on his bedside table within the hour.

20. A T-shirt that says Dadu or Nanu

Best for: a grandfather with a sense of humour. The name the baby will call him, or Promoted to Nanu with the year. He will wear it in every baby photo.

21. A keychain with the grandchild's name

Best for: the grandfather who shows baby photos to the vegetable seller. The grandchild's name on his keys gives him one more reason to talk about the baby.

Gifts for a dad who lives far away

From another city, the gift has to survive a courier box and do some of the talking.

22. A frame with both your cities

Best for: a father and child in different cities. The two names with a line between them and the date of your next visit. Pune to Lucknow. Next visit: Diwali.

23. A letter, with a voice note to go with it

Best for: a dad who will not say he misses you. Write one page about a day with him you still remember, and send a voice note of you reading it. This one is DIY and costs nothing.

24. A small box from you

Best for: a birthday you cannot be there for. A handkerchief with his initials, a keychain with the family name, his favourite namkeen and a card. Seal everything edible well.

Gifts for father by occasion

The same dad needs different gifts through the year. Here is one idea for each big day, from his birthday to Diwali.

25. A birthday box you put together yourself

Best for: a big birthday, such as his 60th. A cap, a keychain, his favourite sweets and a letter from each child. Our birthday gifts under ₹500 has more small pieces for the box.

26. A Father's Day frame with one line from each child

Best for: Father's Day, the third Sunday of June, which in 2027 is Sunday 20 June. Ask each child and grandchild for one line about Papa, and frame them together. He will read it every time he passes.

27. A retirement collage of his working life

Best for: the day he retires. His first ID card photo, one from his office, one with colleagues and one from his farewell. If his office is planning a gift too, our guide to handcrafted corporate gifts helps them plan it.

28. A wall clock with Mummy and Papa's names

Best for: your parents' anniversary, when the gift is for both of them. Their names and wedding year on the dial, for the living room. Our anniversary gift ideas has more for parents.

29. Matching family T-shirts for the Diwali photo

Best for: a Diwali when the whole family is home. Papa's says Head of the family; the rest carry each person's name.

30. A single handkerchief with a note, just because

Best for: a random Sunday. One handkerchief with his initials, folded around a note: Because you never take anything for yourself. Small enough that he cannot object.

If his birthday falls close to Diwali or Raksha Bandhan, makers and couriers are busier than usual. Our festival gifting calendar for India shows the busy weeks and when to order.

What to write on a gift for father

Keep the words short and plain. Most fathers are happier with their name or the family name than with a long quote about the best dad in the world. Put the feelings in the card. Hinglish is fine if that is how your family talks: Papa, Bauji or Abbu on a keychain can mean more than any English word.

Type the wording exactly as it should appear, and check the design proof letter by letter. Dads notice a wrong initial. Our guide to choosing a personalised handmade gift covers proofs and wording in more detail.

What to skip

  • Another wallet, watch or perfume. He has them, he chose them and he likes his own.
  • Gadgets he did not ask for. A device he has to set up becomes a job. If you give tech, set it up for him first.
  • Clothes in a guessed size. A wrong size is an errand, not a gift. Check a shirt he already wears, or choose a cap.
  • A showpiece for the cabinet. With no use and no memory, it will sit behind glass with the others.
  • A last-minute personalised order. Handmade pieces take time to make and deliver. Order at least 10 to 12 days ahead, or buy something ready-made locally and write the card by hand.

Questions people ask

What can I gift my father who says he wants nothing?

Give him something useful, personal and small enough that he cannot object: a keychain with his name for his scooter keys, a cap for his morning walk, handkerchiefs with his initials, or a frame with the address of his first home.

What is a good birthday gift for father?

Start from what he loves. A cricket fan gets a cap in his team's colours with his name; a gardener gets an everlasting bouquet or good garden tools; a chai lover gets handmade cups. For a big birthday such as his 60th, put three or four small things in a box with a letter from each child.

When is Father's Day in India?

Father's Day in India falls on the third Sunday of June, as in many other countries. In 2027 it is Sunday 20 June. For a personalised gift, order at least 10 to 12 days before, so there is time for a design proof, making and delivery.

What is a good retirement gift for father?

Choose something about his working life and his new routine. A collage frame with photos from his career and his farewell, a wall clock with the family name, or a cap for the morning walks he now has time for all work well.

What should I gift my father who lives in another city?

Choose things that travel well in a courier box: a frame with both your cities and the date of your next visit, a handkerchief with his initials, a keychain with the family name and his favourite namkeen. Add a handwritten letter, and send a voice note of you reading it.

Is a personalised gift the same as a customised gift?

In India the two words are used for the same thing. Strictly, customised means you chose options such as a colour or a size, and personalised means the piece carries something that belongs to one person, such as his name. A customised gift for dad in his colour is nice. One with his name is personal.
