Handmade gifts with each person's name on them are remembered long after a branded diary is forgotten. Here is how to plan them: budgets, lead times, the brief to send, and the tax points to check.
Part of our guide: The Complete Guide to Personalised Gifts in India

The short answer
- A gift with the recipient's own name on it is kept; a gift with only the company's logo on it is usually passed on.
- Handmade means limited daily capacity. For 100 or more pieces, start four to six weeks before the date; before Diwali, six to eight.
- Send one clean spreadsheet: the name exactly as it should appear, the option, and the delivery address. Most errors come from the list, not the making.
- In India, GST input credit is generally not available on gifts, and gifts to employees and business partners have their own tax rules. Check with your accountant before you set the budget.
Every year, companies in India spend a great deal on gifts that nobody remembers: a diary, a power bank, a box of dry fruits with a logo sticker. They are not bad gifts. They are just the same as everyone else's, and they say "you are one of four hundred".
Handcrafted corporate gifts say something different. A keychain with a new joiner's name on it, a framed print marking a colleague's five years, a cap embroidered for each member of a team: these are small objects, but each was made for one person. This guide covers how to plan them properly, whether you are an HR manager ordering for a team of 30, a founder thanking early clients, or an agency planning a festive campaign for 500.
Why choose handcrafted gifts for corporate gifting?
Handcrafted gifts work for corporate gifting because they are personal at a scale where most gifts are not. Three practical reasons stand behind that.
- They are kept. People rarely throw away something with their own name on it. A keychain travels with them daily; a frame stays on the desk.
- They are different. A client who receives six similar hampers in Diwali week will remember the one that was plainly made for them.
- They support small makers. Many companies now have a preference, or a policy, for buying from small and local businesses. A handmade order does that directly.
There is an honest trade-off. Handmade pieces take longer, vary slightly from one to the next, and cannot be produced by the thousand overnight. If you need 5,000 identical items next week, this is the wrong route. For anything from 10 to a few hundred, planned ahead, it is often the better one.
Decide who the gift is for
"Corporate gifting" covers several different jobs. The right gift depends on which one you are doing.
| Who | Occasion | What suits it |
|---|---|---|
| New joiners | First day, onboarding kit | Name keychain, embroidered cap, a welcome note |
| Employees | Diwali, new year, work anniversaries, team milestones | Personalised frame, keychain or cap; a small hamper for festivals |
| Clients and partners | Festivals, project completion, thank-you | Hand-painted clock, framed print, a ribbon-flower arrangement |
| Event attendees | Conferences, offsites, weddings of colleagues | Small keepsakes in one design, with or without names |
| Retiring or leaving colleagues | Farewell | A frame with their name and years of service |
For employees and new joiners, put the person's name on the gift. For senior clients, restraint works better: a beautiful object, a handwritten note, and the company name on the card instead of on the piece.

Handcrafted corporate gift ideas by budget
Set the budget per person first, then choose. The bands below show what handmade work typically allows in each. Actual prices depend on the studio, the quantity and how much personalisation each piece needs, so ask for a quote.
| Budget per person | Ideas | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| ₹300 to ₹500 | Resin name keychain, embroidered handkerchief | Large teams, event keepsakes, onboarding kits |
| ₹500 to ₹1,000 | Embroidered name cap, printed T-shirt, keychain with a gift box and note | Team gifts, offsites, festival gifts for staff |
| ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 | Pressed-flower frame, hand-painted wall clock, small two-piece hamper | Work anniversaries, key clients, award gifts |
| Above ₹2,000 | Curated hamper of matching pieces, large frame with a bouquet | Senior clients, retirements, leadership gifts |
How to personalise 100 gifts without mistakes
Personalising one gift is easy. Personalising a hundred is a data job, and it goes wrong in the spreadsheet long before it goes wrong in the studio. A clean list is the most useful thing you can give a maker.
Use one sheet with these columns
- Name as it should appear. Exactly, including capitals: "Priya", not "PRIYA NAIR (HR)".
- Option. Colour or size, if the gift has one.
- Delivery address and phone number, if each gift ships to a home address.
- Reference. Employee code or email, so duplicates and same-name colleagues can be told apart.
Decide the naming rule once
First names only? Full names? What about people who go by a short name? Pick one rule and apply it to everyone. Small pieces take about 12 characters, so "Priya" fits where "Priyadarshini Venkataraman" cannot. For long names, first name only, or initials, keeps the lettering readable.
Get one sign-off
Ask the studio for a proof sheet: every name set in the chosen lettering, on one page. Have one person, ideally from HR, check it against the payroll list and approve it in writing. Fixing a spelling at this stage costs nothing. Fixing it after 100 keychains are poured means making that piece again.
Then decide where the logo goes. A logo on the box, the tag or the note keeps the gift personal. A logo on the object itself turns it into merchandise. If brand visibility matters, a small logo on the reverse is a fair compromise.
How long do bulk handmade orders take?
Longer than you expect, and the making is only part of it. A realistic plan for around 100 personalised pieces looks like this.
| Stage | What happens | Time to allow |
|---|---|---|
| Brief and quote | You share quantity, budget and date; the studio suggests options and prices | 2 to 3 working days |
| Sample | One finished piece is made and sent, or photographed, for approval | 4 to 6 working days |
| Name list and proof | You send the final sheet; the studio returns a proof of every name | 2 to 4 working days |
| Making | The pieces are made in batches | Depends on capacity: see below |
| Packing | Boxing, tagging, notes, address labels | 1 to 3 working days |
| Delivery | Bulk to an office, or individually to homes | 2 to 7 working days |
If your date is closer than that, say so at the start. A good studio will tell you plainly what is possible: a smaller quantity, a simpler piece, or names on tags instead of on the object.
GST and income tax on corporate gifts: what to check
Gifts have tax consequences in India that are easy to miss when the budget is being set. The points below are general information to raise with your accountant, not tax advice: thresholds and section numbers change, and the Income-tax Act was replaced by a new Act from April 2026.
GST: input credit is generally blocked on gifts
Under the GST law (section 17(5)(h) of the CGST Act), input tax credit is not available on goods that are given away as gifts. In practice this means the GST you pay on gifts is a cost to the company and should be inside your budget, not assumed to come back as credit.
GST: gifts to employees up to ₹50,000 a year
An employer and an employee are treated as related persons under GST, so things given free can count as a supply. The law carves out an exception: gifts from an employer to an employee of up to ₹50,000 in value in a financial year are not treated as a supply. Festival gifts for staff normally sit well within that.
Income tax: gifts to employees
A gift from an employer is a perquisite in the employee's hands. For many years the income-tax rules exempted gifts whose total value in a year was below ₹5,000 per employee, with larger amounts taxed as part of salary. The rules were rewritten along with the new Act, so confirm the current limit before promising staff a tax-free gift.
Income tax: gifts to clients, dealers and partners
Since July 2022, a business that gives a benefit or perquisite to a resident in the course of that person's business or profession has had to deduct tax at source at 10% once the total value to that person in a financial year crosses ₹20,000. This is the rule widely known as section 194R of the earlier Act. A ₹1,500 festival gift to a client will not reach that figure on its own, but it counts towards the yearly total alongside trips, vouchers and other benefits given to the same person.
Ask your supplier for a proper tax invoice showing their GSTIN, the HSN code and the GST charged. You will need it for your books whatever the treatment.
Delivery, packaging and the note
One address or many? Sending everything to the office is cheaper and simpler, and lets you hand gifts over in person. Sending to home addresses suits remote teams and feels more like a present, but it needs accurate addresses and phone numbers, costs more per piece, and a few parcels will always need a second delivery attempt. Collect addresses through a form with a deadline, not through forwarded emails.
Packaging. Handmade pieces deserve to be opened, not just handed over. A simple box or wrap, a tag with the person's name and a card is enough. Fragile pieces such as clocks and frames need proper protective packing for courier.
The note. A gift from a company is read as a message from a person, so sign it as one. "Thank you for a wonderful year. Anita, and all of us at the Bengaluru office" does more than the company name alone. If the list is small enough, a handwritten note is worth the effort.
Common corporate gifting mistakes
- Starting three weeks before Diwali. By then, makers and couriers are at capacity. Start in August or early September.
- Choosing for the logo, not the person. A gift that is mainly advertising is treated like advertising.
- Sending a messy list. Mixed capitals, missing surnames, old addresses. Clean the sheet before you send it.
- Skipping the sample. Photographs hide scale and finish. Hold one piece before ordering a hundred.
- Forgetting dietary, cultural and practical differences. Objects are safer than food for a mixed group, and nothing should assume a festival everyone celebrates.
- Leaving out tax and delivery. They can add a tenth or more to the cost. Put them in the budget from the first day.
What to send a studio to get an accurate quote
A clear brief gets you a clear price, usually in one reply. Include these eight things.
- Quantity, and whether it may change by a few.
- Budget per person, including or excluding GST and delivery.
- The date the gifts must be in people's hands.
- Who they are for: employees, clients, event guests.
- Personalisation: names on each piece, or one design for all.
- Branding: where the logo should appear, if anywhere.
- Delivery: one address or many, and in which cities.
- Billing details: company name, GSTIN and billing address for the tax invoice.
With those, a studio can tell you what is possible, what it will cost and when you need to confirm. You can also read our guide to choosing a personalised handmade gift, which covers what to write on each piece, and browse the pieces that can carry a name.
Questions people ask
What are good handcrafted corporate gift ideas for employees?
Pieces that carry the employee's own name work best: a resin name keychain, an embroidered cap, a personalised frame for a work anniversary. They cost from about ₹300 to ₹2,000 per person and are kept far longer than generic branded items.
How early should we order corporate gifts for Diwali?
For 100 or more personalised handmade pieces, place the order six to eight weeks before Diwali, which usually means by early September. That allows time for a sample, a proof of every name, making in batches, packing and delivery during the busiest courier weeks of the year.
Can each gift in a bulk order have a different name?
Yes. Share one spreadsheet with each name exactly as it should appear, and ask for a proof of all the names before production. Small pieces take about 12 characters, so decide on first names or initials for long names.
Can a company claim GST input credit on corporate gifts?
Generally no. Under section 17(5)(h) of the CGST Act, input tax credit is blocked on goods given away as gifts, so the GST paid is a cost. Confirm how this applies to your business with your accountant.
Are gifts to employees taxable in India?
They can be. A gift from an employer is a perquisite; for many years gifts totalling under ₹5,000 a year per employee were exempt under the income-tax rules, and under GST, gifts of up to ₹50,000 a year to an employee are not treated as a supply. The income-tax rules were rewritten from April 2026, so check the current limits.
Can corporate gifts be delivered to each employee's home?
Yes, if you provide a full address and phone number for each person. Home delivery costs more per piece than one bulk delivery to an office and needs accurate addresses, so collect them through a form with a clear deadline.
