Rakhi gifts that go both ways: from behen to bhai alongside the rakhi, and from bhai to behen after it. Sorted by budget and by sibling, with how to send it all to another city.
Part of our guide: Festival Gifting Calendar for India 2026–27: Dates and Deadlines

The short answer
- Raksha Bandhan falls on Shravan Purnima, the full moon of the month of Shravan, so the date moves every year. Check the date for the year before you plan.
- For a brother under ₹500: a keychain with the name you call him, a handkerchief with his initials or a small frame with an old Rakhi photo.
- For a sister under ₹500: a keychain with her name, a mini everlasting flower bunch or a handkerchief with her initial, tucked in with the cash envelope.
- Order a personalised gift 10 to 12 days ahead, and earlier if it has to travel to another city or abroad.
- We do not make rakhis. Pair our gift with a rakhi from your local market, and post the two together.
The rakhi is the easy part. You walk into the market in Shravan and there are a hundred of them on every stall. The hard part is the Rakhi gift for brother who says he needs nothing, or the gift for a sister who has been tying your rakhi since before you could tie your own shoes, and who will notice if you hand over the same envelope as last year.
The ideas below go both ways, behen to bhai and bhai to behen, and are sorted by budget and then by sibling: elder, younger, far away, bhabhi, cousins and children. Some are pieces we make, and we say so; the rest are from other makers or things to do yourself. For every other festival in the year, see our festival gifting calendar for India.
What is a good Rakhi gift for brother?
A good Rakhi gift for a brother is something he will use every day, carrying the name only the family calls him: a keychain for his bike keys, a cap, a handkerchief with his initials or a frame with an old Rakhi photo of the two of you. Send it with the rakhi, so he opens both together.
For a sister, the same rule holds. Add one personal thing to the gift she is expecting, and she will remember the year you got it right.
When is Raksha Bandhan, and when should you order?
Raksha Bandhan falls on Shravan Purnima, the full-moon day of the month of Shravan in the Hindu lunar calendar. It usually lands in August, but the date changes from year to year and the auspicious time for tying the rakhi changes with it. Check the date for the year in your local panchang before you plan anything.
Siblings today often live in different cities, so most Rakhi gifts travel. Order a personalised piece 10 to 12 days ahead, and earlier if it has to go to another city or another country. The week before Rakhi is one of the busiest of the year for couriers everywhere in India.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| As soon as you know the date | Decide who you are buying for, the budget and the address where each sibling will be on the day. |
| Three weeks before, if it travels far | Order anything personalised that is going abroad or to a distant city, and buy the rakhi from your local market. |
| 10 to 12 days before | The last safe point for a personalised order delivered within India. Send names and dates in typed text. |
| Within two days of ordering | Check the design proof letter by letter and approve it. |
| The last week | Buy locally, carry it yourself and write the note by hand. |
Who gives the gift on Rakhi?
Traditionally the sister ties the rakhi on her brother's wrist, applies a tilak, does his aarti and feeds him a sweet. He promises to protect her and gives her a gift, very often cash in an envelope. That is still how most families do it.
Today the gift goes both ways. Many sisters send something alongside the rakhi, especially when the brother lives away, and sisters tie rakhis on sisters too. Younger brothers who are still students often give a small gift and get away with it. The only rule that matters is that each side gives something chosen for the other person.
Rakhi is often confused with Bhai Dooj, which comes at the end of Diwali. On Bhai Dooj there is no thread, only a tilak and a meal. If you are planning both, our Bhai Dooj gift ideas will help you avoid giving the same thing twice in one year.
How to choose a Rakhi gift
- Use the name you actually call them. Bhai, Dada, Didi, Chhoti, or the childhood nickname they hate. That word is what makes a personalised gift feel like it came from you.
- Match the gift to the rakhi moment. Something small enough to open at the thali, in front of the family, works better than a big box that has to wait until evening.
- Think about the year they are having. A first job, a new city, a wedding, a baby. A gift that fits this Rakhi beats one that would fit any Rakhi.
- Check what you gave last time. If you gave a frame at Rakhi last year, or at Bhai Dooj, choose something else.
- Decide early if it has to travel. The courier is part of the gift. Plan its route before you choose the gift.
Rakhi gifts for brother under ₹500
This is the gift that goes in the envelope with the rakhi, so it should be flat, light and impossible to lose in the post.
1. A keychain that just says Bhai
Best for: a brother who has just got his first bike or flat keys. One word, the word you use. He will roll his eyes, then use it every day. We make this.
2. A handkerchief with his initials
Best for: an elder brother who still carries a hanky to the office. Two initials in one corner, in a thread colour that suits his shirts. It folds flat in the rakhi envelope. We make this.
3. A small frame with an old Rakhi photo
Best for: the brother who has moved away. Find the photo from the year you were both in school uniform, with the rakhi on his wrist. Scan it properly rather than photographing the album. We make the frame.
4. His favourite sweet, from the shop near home
Best for: a brother in a hostel or another city. Not a fancy box, but the exact mithai from the shop you both grew up with. Seal it well and send it only if the courier is quick.
Rakhi gifts for brother from ₹500 to ₹1,000
5. A cap with one word on it
Best for: a brother who wears a cap to the gym, on rides or to cricket on Sunday. Bhai, his nickname or his jersey number. Embroidery tends to outlast print on a cap he wears every week. We make this.
6. A customised T-shirt with a family line
Best for: the brother closest to you in age. The thing your mother says every time he leaves the house, or the name of the sibling group chat. Check his size from a T-shirt he already wears. We make this.
7. Two keychains, one for each of you
Best for: siblings in different cities. Yours says Bhai, his says Didi or Behen. A small thing in each pocket that the other one has too. We make these.
8. A small box for the thali moment
Best for: when one thing feels too little. A keychain, his favourite namkeen, the rakhi and a two-line note, all in one box that he opens in front of the family.
Rakhi gifts for brother above ₹1,000
Spend more only if the gift will be seen every day. Otherwise a smaller gift and a long phone call is the better use of the money.
9. A wall clock for his first home
Best for: a brother who has just moved into his own place. His name on the dial, or the family surname if he has married this year. Ask for a quiet movement if it is going in a bedroom. We make this.
10. A collage frame of Rakhis over the years
Best for: a milestone Rakhi, such as the first one after his wedding. One Rakhi photo from each stage of your lives, in order, with the years underneath. We make the frame.
11. A leather watch strap from a leather maker
Best for: a brother with one good watch. The wrist is where the rakhi goes, so a strap is a quiet echo of the day. Look for a small leather worker and check his strap width first.
Rakhi gifts for sister under ₹500
This is the traditional side of the day: the brother's thank-you after the thread is tied. Cash is welcome, but add one small thing to the envelope and it becomes a gift. Our list of personalised gifts for sister has many more ideas for the rest of the year.
12. A keychain with her name or Didi
Best for: every sister. Her name, or the word you have called her since you could talk. It goes on her keys the same evening. We make this.
13. A mini everlasting flower bunch
Best for: a sister in a hostel or a shared flat. No vase and no water, and it will still be on her desk at Diwali. We make this.
14. A handkerchief with her initial
Best for: an elder sister who likes small, pretty things. One letter in a corner, in her favourite colour. It slips inside the cash envelope. We make this.
15. Her mehndi, booked and paid for
Best for: a sister who puts on mehndi for the festival. Find out which local artist she likes and pay for the slot in advance. It is a gift from another maker, and it is made entirely by hand.
Rakhi gifts for sister from ₹500 to ₹1,000
16. An everlasting bouquet in her colour
Best for: a sister who loves flowers. Fresh flowers from Rakhi morning are gone by the weekend; these stay on her shelf until next Rakhi. Ask for a tag with a short line from you. We make this.
17. A frame with a photo of the two of you
Best for: a sister who has married or moved out. Choose a photo in which she looks good, not the funny one, and add the place and year underneath. We make this.
18. A customised T-shirt with a line she says
Best for: a sister with a sense of humour. The thing she says ten times a day, in big letters. Size up if you are unsure. We make this.
Rakhi gifts for sister above ₹1,000
19. A wall clock for her home
Best for: a sister who has just set up a home. Her family's name on the dial, for the room where guests sit. We make this.
20. A handloom dupatta or saree from a weaver
Best for: an elder sister. Buy from a weavers' cooperative or a handloom exhibition, and ask your mother which colours she does not already have. This one is from other makers.
21. A box you put together yourself
Best for: making up for a missed birthday. A keychain with her name, a mini bouquet, her favourite chocolate and a handwritten note, with the envelope inside.
Rakhi gifts by sibling
The same budget buys a different gift depending on who is on the other end of the thread. Here is what changes for each.
For an elder brother or didi
Elder siblings have usually been the ones giving for years. Give them something a little grown-up and a little sentimental: initials on a handkerchief, an old photo in a good frame, or a wall clock for the home they run. Avoid anything that looks like pocket money.
For a younger brother or chhoti behen
Younger siblings want fun more than sentiment. A cap with a nickname, a customised T-shirt with a family joke or a keychain for their first bike keys all land well. If they are still at school, keep it small and let the parents handle the cash.
For a brother abroad or in another city
Send things that are flat, light and will not break: a handkerchief, a keychain, a cap, a small frame. For a brother abroad, ask the courier what can be sent to that country before you add any sweets or food, and order well before the usual 10 to 12 days. Many families send the rakhi early and do the tilak and aarti on a video call.
For your bhabhi
In many families, especially in Rajasthan and among Marwari families, sisters also tie a lumba, a rakhi for the bhabhi that hangs from her bangle. If yours does, a small gift for her is a kind touch: a mini everlasting bunch, a handkerchief with her initial, or a keychain with both their names. Choose the lumba from the same local stall as the rakhi.
For cousins
When there are six cousins and one budget, give the same small gift to everyone, personalised with each name. Matching keychains or handkerchiefs with each cousin's initials keep the cost down and stop anyone feeling left out. Order them together in one go.
For children
For little ones, parents buy both gifts, and both children should get one. A cap that says Chhota Bhai, a mini everlasting flower bunch for the sister who tied the rakhi, or a frame for this year's Rakhi photo with both names under it. Start the frame tradition early; in ten years you will have a wall.
How to send a rakhi and a gift by courier
Pack the rakhi and the gift in one parcel, send it early to the address where your sibling will actually be on the day, and add a handwritten note and a small packet of roli and rice for the tilak. Then fix a time for a video call.
- Buy the rakhi first. Pick it from your local market, then order the gift so both are ready to go together.
- Keep the rakhi flat. Put it in a small paper envelope or a card so the thread and beads do not tangle or crush.
- Add the tilak. A small sealed packet of roli and a few grains of rice, so he can do the tilak himself on the call.
- Send it where they will be. If your brother is going home for the long weekend, send it there, not to his flat.
- Give the courier a phone number that will be answered.
- Order 10 to 12 days ahead, and earlier if it has to travel. Rakhi week is when parcels run late across the country.
- Tell them not to open it early. Or ask someone in the house to hide it until the morning.
Rakhi gifts at a glance, by budget
Use the bands as a starting point. See what fits in our gifts under ₹500 and gifts under ₹1,000.
| Budget | For brother | For sister | For bhabhi or cousins |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under ₹500 | Bhai keychain, initials handkerchief, old Rakhi photo frame | Didi keychain, mini everlasting bunch, initial handkerchief | Matching keychains or handkerchiefs with each name |
| ₹500 to ₹1,000 | Cap with one word, customised T-shirt, pair of keychains | Everlasting bouquet, frame of the two of you, T-shirt | A mini bunch with a keychain for bhabhi |
| Above ₹1,000 | Wall clock, Rakhi collage frame | Wall clock, handloom dupatta, a box you build | One shared wall clock with the couple's names |
What to write on a Rakhi gift
Write the name you call them, and keep the feelings for the note. Short words come out larger and clearer on a personalised piece, and siblings rarely talk to each other in long sentences anyway. Hinglish is fine if that is how your family talks.
| Piece | What fits | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Keychain | A nickname or one word | Bhai, Didi, Chotu |
| Cap | One word | Bhai, Dada, Captain |
| Handkerchief | Initials | A.S. |
| Photo frame | A place and a year | Nagpur, Rakhi 2009 |
| T-shirt | A family line of two to four words | Mummy's favourite (not) |
| Gift tag | Two words | Happy Rakhi |
| Note in the parcel | Two honest lines, by hand | Still tying it, still annoying you. |
Type the wording exactly as it should appear, with the capitals where you want them, and check the design proof before you approve it. Our guide to choosing a personalised handmade gift covers proofs and wording in more detail.
What to skip
- Only cash, with nothing else. It is welcome and forgotten by evening. Add one small thing to the envelope.
- The same gift you gave at Bhai Dooj. They will notice, even if they say nothing.
- A heavy or fragile parcel to another city. Glass and big boxes break in Rakhi week. Choose something flat.
- Sweets on a slow route. Mithai that sits in a warehouse for four days in August is not a gift.
- Clothes in a guessed size. A wrong size is an errand. Check a shirt they already wear, or choose a cap.
- A personalised order placed in the last week. A rushed piece without a proof is how names get misspelled. Buy locally and write the note by hand.

Questions people ask
What is the best Rakhi gift for a brother?
Give him something he will use every day with the name you call him on it: a keychain that says Bhai, a cap with one word, a handkerchief with his initials or a frame with an old Rakhi photo. Brothers buy what they need themselves, so the personal detail matters more than the price.
What should a brother give his sister on Raksha Bandhan?
Traditionally a brother gives his sister a gift, often cash, after she ties the rakhi. Add one personal thing to the envelope: a keychain with her name, a mini everlasting flower bunch, a handkerchief with her initial or a framed photo of the two of you.
When is Raksha Bandhan?
Raksha Bandhan falls on Shravan Purnima, the full-moon day of Shravan in the Hindu lunar calendar, usually in August. The date and the auspicious time for tying the rakhi change every year, so check the date for the year in your local panchang before you plan or order.
What is a good Rakhi gift under ₹500?
Under ₹500, choose a keychain with a nickname, a handkerchief with initials, a small frame with an old Rakhi photo or a mini everlasting flower bunch. All of these are flat and light, so they fit in the same envelope or small parcel as the rakhi.
How early should I order a Rakhi gift for a brother in another city?
Order a personalised gift 10 to 12 days ahead, and earlier if it has to travel to another city or abroad. Rakhi week is one of the busiest of the year for couriers. Send it to where your brother will be on the day, with a phone number that will be answered.
Do you make rakhis?
No. We make personalised gifts such as keychains, caps, handkerchiefs, T-shirts, frames, wall clocks and everlasting flowers. Pair our gift with a rakhi from your local market, and post the two together in one parcel or envelope.
Is a personalised gift the same as a customised gift?
In India the two words are used for the same thing. Strictly, customised means you picked options such as a colour or size, and personalised means the piece carries something that belongs to one person, such as a name. A customised cap is nice; a cap that says Bhai is personal.
Want their name on it by Rakhi?
Browse the pieces that can carry a name, or message us on WhatsApp with your idea for a custom design. We show you a proof before we make anything. Order 10 to 12 days ahead, and earlier if it has to travel.
