Holi gift ideas for family, friends, colleagues and neighbours, and return gifts for a Holi party or a society celebration. With how to build a hamper, what survives the colours and when to order.
Part of our guide: Festival Gifting Calendar for India 2026–27: Dates and Deadlines

The short answer
- Holi follows the lunar calendar and falls on Phalguna Purnima, so its date moves every year. Check the date for the year before you plan or order.
- A good Holi hamper is one keepsake that lasts, plus two or three things for the day: herbal gulal, gujiya and a thandai mix, bought from other shops or made at home.
- The keepsake is what is still around after the colours wash off: a name keychain, a cap or a T-shirt for the party, a handkerchief with an initial.
- For a Holi party or a society celebration, choose one design for everyone, add names only if the group is small, and keep a few spare.
- Order personalised pieces 10 to 12 days ahead, and about two weeks ahead if you need many matching pieces.
The society WhatsApp group has already started. Someone is arranging the tanker, someone else is arguing about the DJ, and you have offered to sort out the gifts. Or it is simpler than that: your bua is coming over, your best friend is hosting a terrace party, and you want to turn up with something better than a packet of colour. Either way you need Holi gift ideas that work on a day when everything gets wet, pink and sticky.
We make personalised gifts by hand: keychains, caps, custom T-shirts, handkerchiefs, frames and everlasting flowers with a name, a date or a short word on them. We do not make colours, sweets or anything to eat, so this guide is honest about which part of a Holi gift is ours and which part you will find at the mithai shop, the market or in your own kitchen. For Holi and every other festival of the year in one place, see our festival gifting calendar.
What do people give on Holi?
Holi gifts are usually light and cheerful: a box of gujiya, a thandai mix, a pack of gulal, or a small hamper that puts these together. They are given to family on the morning of Holi, taken to a friend's party, or sent to neighbours and colleagues the day before. Return gifts are handed to guests at a Holi party or a society celebration.
The trouble with most Holi gifts is that they are gone by evening. The colours are thrown, the gujiya is eaten, the thandai is drunk. That is the point of Holi, and it is lovely. But if you want the gift to be remembered, add one thing that survives the day: a keepsake with a name, a date or a Holi word on it. That is what this guide is built around.
How to build a Holi gift hamper
A Holi hamper does not need ten things. It needs one thing that lasts and two or three things for the day, packed so that nothing leaks, crumbles or stains. Here is a simple way to build one.
- Start with the keepsake. One personalised piece: a name keychain, a cap, a T-shirt or a handkerchief. This is the part that is still around next Holi.
- Add colour. Two or three small packets of herbal or organic gulal from a shop you trust. Dry colour in small sealed packets is easier to pack than anything wet.
- Add something sweet. Gujiya from your mithai shop or your own kitchen, in a separate sealed box so the ghee does not reach anything else.
- Add a drink. A thandai mix, either a bought packet or a jar of your own masala with a handwritten label.
- Write a card. Two lines in your own hand. This matters more than a fifth item.
- Pack it in something reusable. A cloth bag, a basket or a sturdy box that will be used again long after the festival.
| Part of the hamper | Ideas | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Keepsake | Name keychain, cap, T-shirt, handkerchief, small frame | A maker like us |
| Colour | Small packets of herbal or organic gulal | A shop or brand you trust |
| Sweet | Gujiya, malpua, mathri, a box of mithai | Your mithai shop or your kitchen |
| Drink | Thandai mix or thandai masala | A shop, or homemade with a label |
| Card | Two handwritten lines | You |
| Packing | Cloth bag, basket, box with a ribbon | A local market or your cupboard |
A word on colours
If you put colour in a gift, choose gentle ones. Look for gulal sold as herbal or skin-friendly, from a shop or brand you trust, with a clear label listing what is in it. Avoid loose colour of unknown origin from a roadside heap, and skip anything with a strong chemical smell or a metallic shine.
We do not make colours, so we cannot tell you which brand to buy, and no colour is right for everyone. If the person you are giving to has sensitive skin, a young child or an elderly parent at home, a gift without colour is perfectly fine. A keepsake, a sweet box and a good card make a complete Holi gift on their own.
Holi keepsakes that survive the day
These are the parts of a Holi gift that we can make, and the ones that stay. Each one can carry a name, a date or a short Holi word. Keep the wording short and bright: "Rang Barse", "Bura Na Mano", "Holi Hai", a name and the year.
1. A custom T-shirt for the Holi party
Best for: the group that plays together every year. A plain light T-shirt with a name, a nickname or "Holi" and the year. It is worn once in colour and then kept as the record of that year's Holi, stains and all. Pick a light colour so the colours show. We make this.
2. A cap with a name or a Holi word
Best for: friends who play out in the sun all afternoon. A cap keeps colour out of the eyes and the sun off the head, and with a name on it, nobody loses theirs in the crowd. We make this.
3. A keychain with "Rang Barse" or a name
Best for: anyone, which is why it is the easiest keepsake to add to a hamper. It is small, it travels well, and it goes straight onto a set of keys where it is seen every day. Holi words, a name or an initial all work. We make this.
4. A handkerchief with an initial
Best for: elders and the relatives who come for the puja and the gujiya, not the colours. A quiet, useful gift that suits a nani, a mama or a family friend. Fold it into the hamper with a sweet box. We make this.
5. A small frame with the date of this Holi
Best for: a family or a group of friends who will take a photo on the day. Give the frame with the year and a short line on it, and let them print their own favourite picture from the afternoon. We make this.
6. A small bunch of everlasting flowers
Best for: a host or a neighbour, when the gift should brighten the house rather than the guests. Pick bright Holi colours: pink, yellow, orange and green. It needs no water and lasts long after the festival. We make this.
7. A small décor piece for the home
Best for: a family celebrating their first Holi in a new home. A small hanging or table piece in Holi colours, with the family name or the year. It comes out every spring after that. We make small décor pieces like this.
Holi gift ideas by person
The same festival calls for different gifts depending on who is receiving it. Here is a quick way to match the keepsake and the rest of the hamper to the person.
| For | Keepsake | With it | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parents and elders | Handkerchief with an initial, small frame | Gujiya from home, a thandai mix | Many prefer tilak to colour; skip the gulal if unsure |
| Siblings and cousins | Cap or T-shirt with a nickname | Herbal gulal, a box of sweets | A matching set for all the cousins looks planned |
| Close friends | T-shirt for the party, name keychain | Thandai mix, gulal, a long card | An inside joke on the T-shirt is fine among friends |
| Colleagues | Name keychain, small frame | Wrapped sweets | Keep it neutral; no colour in an office gift |
| Neighbours | Everlasting flowers, keychain with the family name | A plate of gujiya | Take it over the day before, when everyone is at home |
| Children | Cap or T-shirt with their name | A small packet of gentle gulal | Check with the parents about colour first |
For a close friend you can go further with the wording, and our best friend gift ideas have more on that. For anything with a name on it, our complete guide to personalised gifts in India explains which methods last and what to check before you order.
Holi return gifts for a party or society
A Holi party or a society celebration means many guests, a small budget per piece and no time on the day. The rules are the same as for any return gift: the same for everyone, easy to carry home, and handed out by one person at the gate. For the full method of counting and packing, see our guide to Diwali return gifts; nearly all of it works for Holi too.
- Choose one design for everyone. Thirty different gifts mean thirty decisions and someone comparing in the lift. One design, one colour of ribbon, one tag looks like a set.
- Add names only for a small group. For a party of fifteen friends, a name on each keychain or cap is lovely. For a society of eighty homes, put "Holi" and the year, or the society's name, and skip the names.
- Give something that survives water. Guests are wet and covered in colour when they leave. Pack each gift in a small sealed pouch or a paper bag inside a plastic one, and keep the basket away from the colour zone.
- Keep five spare. Someone always brings a cousin, and the watchman and the housekeeping staff should get one too.
- Hand them out at the gate, not the start. If the gift is a T-shirt or cap for the day, give it as people arrive. If it is a keepsake, give it as they leave.
8. Matching caps for a society Holi
Best for: a housing society or a big family. One colour, one Holi word, and the society's or family's name. Handed out at the start, they make the whole crowd look like a team in the photos. We make this.
9. Matching T-shirts with the year
Best for: a group of friends or cousins who play together every year. The same T-shirt for everyone, with "Holi" and the year, and a name on the back if the group is small. Send the sizes in one typed list. We make this.
10. A keychain for each guest
Best for: a party where you know every guest's name. One design, a different name on each, or the same Holi word on all of them for a larger crowd. Light and easy to hand out. We make this.
11. A cloth potli of gulal and sweets
Best for: large numbers on a small budget. A drawstring potli with two small packets of herbal gulal and a few wrapped sweets, bought from a shop or a local maker. The potli gets reused.
12. A small jar of homemade thandai masala
Best for: a family party where the host loves to cook. A small jar of your own thandai masala with a handwritten label of what is in it and how to make the drink. It is DIY, so make it a few days ahead and keep it sealed.
Holi gifts by budget
These bands are a rough guide to help you plan, not our prices or a quote. The cost of any personalised piece depends on what it is and what goes on it, so ask before you order.
| Budget per gift | Good choices |
|---|---|
| Under ₹300 | A cloth potli of gulal and sweets, a jar of homemade thandai masala, a card |
| ₹300 to ₹500 | A name keychain with a small sweet box, a handkerchief with an initial |
| ₹500 to ₹1,000 | A cap or T-shirt for the party, or a small hamper of a keepsake, gulal and gujiya |
| Above ₹1,000 | A fuller hamper with a frame or everlasting flowers, sweets and a thandai mix |
To browse, start with gifts under ₹500 or gifts under ₹1,000, or see all the pieces that can carry a name.
When should you order Holi gifts?
Find the date of Holi for the year first, then count back. For one or two personalised pieces, order 10 to 12 days ahead. For many matching pieces, such as caps for a society or T-shirts for a group, give it about two weeks, because each one is made separately and the sizes and names need checking.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| About three weeks before | Check the date. Fix the guest list and the budget per gift. |
| About two weeks before | Order many matching pieces: caps, T-shirts or keychains for a group. Send names and sizes in one typed list. |
| 10 to 12 days before | Order one or two personalised keepsakes for a hamper. |
| The week of Holi | Buy gulal, sweets and thandai mix from shops, or make them at home. Pack the hampers. |
| The day before | Deliver to neighbours and colleagues. Put the return gifts by the gate. |
Holi gifts for the office
Offices that mark Holi usually keep it simple: a box of sweets for each person, and sometimes a small keepsake. Leave colour out of an office gift, since not everyone plays and some people prefer not to. A name keychain or a small frame with "Happy Holi" and the year works for a whole team, with the same design for everyone.
For teams, the planning is the same as for any festival: a typed list of names, a budget per head that includes packing and delivery, and a date the gifts must reach the office. Our guide to handcrafted corporate gifts in India covers timelines in more detail. For ten or more pieces, the corporate gifting form is the quickest way to ask what is possible by your date.
What to write on a Holi gift
Keep the words short. A keychain or a cap has room for a name or two or three words, and a T-shirt for a line. Save the longer wishes for the card.
- On the keepsake: "Rang Barse", "Holi Hai", "Bura Na Mano, Holi Hai", a name, a nickname, or "Holi" with the year.
- On the tag: "Happy Holi, from the Mehtas", "Holi mubarak, with love", or the guest's name for a return gift.
- In the card: two lines in your own hand. "Wishing you a Holi as bright as you are" or a memory from last year's Holi does the job.
- For an office: "Happy Holi" and the year, and the team's or company's name on the tag, not the gift.
Holi gifts to skip
- Loose colour of unknown origin. If you add colour, buy sealed, labelled packets from a shop you trust.
- Water balloons and pichkaris for adults. Children love them; most grown-up hosts do not want more.
- Anything fragile. Glass and ceramic do not mix with a wet, crowded party.
- Unlabelled food. Homemade is lovely, but say what is in it.
- Bhang. Not as a gift, and never in a hamper for someone else's family.
- Different return gifts for different guests at the same party. One design for everyone avoids the comparison.
- White clothes as a gift for a puja guest. Lovely for the party crowd, but the elder who came for tilak and gujiya will not want a T-shirt.

Questions people ask
What are good Holi gift ideas for family and friends?
A small Holi hamper with one keepsake and two or three things for the day works well. Pair a name keychain, a cap or a party T-shirt with herbal gulal, gujiya and a thandai mix, bought from shops or made at home. Add a handwritten card. For elders, swap the colour for a handkerchief with an initial.
What should I give as a return gift at a Holi party?
Give every guest the same thing: matching caps or T-shirts handed out as they arrive, a keychain with each guest's name for a small party, or a cloth potli of gulal and wrapped sweets for a large one. Pack each gift so it stays dry, keep five spare and give one person the job of handing them out.
What goes into a Holi gift hamper?
One keepsake that lasts, such as a name keychain, a cap or a small frame, plus small sealed packets of herbal gulal, a box of gujiya and a thandai mix. Pack sweets in a separate sealed box, label anything homemade, add a short card and use a cloth bag or basket that will be used again.
When should I order personalised Holi gifts?
Check the date of Holi for the year first, since it follows the lunar calendar. Order one or two personalised pieces 10 to 12 days ahead. For many matching pieces, such as caps or T-shirts for a society or a group, allow about two weeks and send all names and sizes in one typed list.
Are customised Holi T-shirts a good idea?
Yes, for a group that plays together. A light T-shirt with a name, a nickname or Holi and the year is worn once in colour and kept as a record of that Holi. Choose one design for everyone, collect sizes in one list and order about two weeks ahead for a group.
What is a good Holi gift for colleagues?
Keep it neutral and leave out colour, since not everyone plays. A box of wrapped sweets with a name keychain or a small frame reading Happy Holi and the year works for a whole team. For ten or more pieces, ask for a quote with your date through a corporate gifting form.
Want a Holi keepsake with a name on it?
Send us the names, the date of your party and how many you need on WhatsApp, or describe a custom design as a custom-order request. We will reply with what we can make and by when.
