Festivals and occasions

Her first Karwa Chauth after marriage is watched more closely than any later one. Here is who usually sends what, how to plan the days before, and which gifts suit a first year.

Part of our guide: Festival Gifting Calendar for India 2026–27: Dates and Deadlines

The short answer

  • Drik Panchang for New Delhi lists Karwa Chauth 2026 on Thursday 29 October. Some panchangs, such as those set to the US, show the 28th, and moonrise differs by city, so check your own city before you plan.
  • On a first Karwa Chauth the families usually send their own gifts, so yours is the personal one: something that carries the date and lasts beyond the year.
  • Personalised pieces need about two weeks, and we do not promise a turnaround. With under two weeks left, message us on WhatsApp to ask what can be ready, or choose something not personalised.
  • Your time counts as much as the gift: be home early, keep her company and settle the moonrise plan before the day.
  • Give the gift after she has seen the moon and eaten, not before.

Searching for a first Karwa Chauth gift for your wife usually starts with a small panic. Everyone around you seems to know what happens on the day, and this time you are one of the people it happens to. The good news is that the gift is only a small part of what she will remember.

This post is about what changes the first time: who sends what, what the day looks like when the home is new to her, and how to plan the days before. For gift ideas sorted by budget, see our longer list of Karwa Chauth gifts for a wife. Karwa Chauth is one of many dates worth planning around, and the festival gifting calendar has the rest of the year.

When is Karwa Chauth 2026, and how much time is left?

Drik Panchang for New Delhi lists Karwa Chauth 2026 on Thursday 29 October. The Chaturthi tithi runs from the early hours of the 29th to the night of the 29th, and the moon rises under it that evening, at about 8:17 PM in Delhi. Panchangs are not all calculated the same way, and a few, including ones set to the US, show Wednesday 28 October, so check the date for your own city. Moonrise falls at a different time in every city. Open a panchang for your own city and note the moonrise time before you plan anything else.

Today is Saturday 17 October, so there are 12 days left. That is the honest problem with a personalised gift. A made-to-order piece usually needs about two weeks, and we do not promise a turnaround. You have three sensible choices.

  • Ask us what can be ready. Message us on WhatsApp with what you have in mind and the date. We will tell you what is possible, with no promise attached, and you can decide from there.
  • Choose something not personalised. A ready-made bouquet or a framed print still looks thoughtful with your own note.
  • Make it yourself. A letter, or a printed photo in a simple frame, can be finished in an evening.

What is different about the first Karwa Chauth after marriage?

Karwa Chauth is a fast kept by many married women, from sunrise until the moon is seen. The first one comes with extra weight. She may be in a house she has lived in for a few months, with relatives she is still getting to know, doing every step for the first time while people watch kindly and closely.

Customs vary a great deal between families, communities and regions, so treat what follows as common patterns, not rules. In many families the day is also a showing of the new bride, with relatives calling, neighbours dropping in and photographs taken. For you, that means two jobs: knowing how your family does things, and making sure she does not have to guess.

Who sends what: sargi, baya and your own gift

In many families, the fast begins before dawn with sargi, a meal that the mother-in-law prepares or sends. It is commonly fruit, sweets, dry fruits and snacks, eaten before sunrise. Some families also include clothes or decorative items for the bride. Customs differ on where a new bride spends her first Karwa Chauth. Some families celebrate it at the in-laws' home, and in others she may be at her parents' house for the day.

In many families the bride's parents send a gift of their own, often called baya: clothes, sweets and sometimes jewellery or other items, which she may share with the elders of the house after the evening puja. It varies, and some families send very little or nothing. A few skip the exchange altogether.

Do not guess at any of this and do not ask your wife in a way that sounds like a test. Ask your mother what her side usually sends, and ask your mother-in-law, gently and early, whether her side plans to. Then you know what is already coming.

Who usually gives what on a first Karwa Chauth (it varies by family)
FromWhat is commonly givenWhat it leaves for you
Your mother, or your sideSargi for the pre-dawn meal, sometimes clothes or jewelleryNothing food-related, and no need to repeat clothes
Her parents, or her sideA gift basket of clothes, sweets or other items, in many familiesAvoid another outfit or sweet box unless you have heard otherwise
YouOften a gift, but it is the one with the most freedomSomething personal that carries a date, a photo or a message

The reasoning is simple. If clothes, sweets and perhaps jewellery are already arriving from two directions, a third saree adds little. A frame, a keychain or a letter does something they cannot: it comes from you, and it is about the two of you.

A plan for the days before, starting today

Counting from Saturday 17 October, with Karwa Chauth on Thursday 29 October, this is a calm way to use the time. It assumes you still want something personalised. If not, skip to the second row of the table and shorten the rest.

Twelve days to Karwa Chauth 2026
WhenWhat to do
Saturday 17 OctoberCheck the date and moonrise for your city. Choose the gift. If it is personalised, message us on WhatsApp today and ask what can be ready.
Sunday 18 to Tuesday 20 OctoberSettle the wording and find the photo. Ask your mother who is sending the sargi and who is coming in the evening.
Wednesday 21 to Friday 23 OctoberApprove the design if one is shown. Check every letter and digit before you say yes.
Saturday 24 to Monday 26 OctoberIf a parcel is on its way, track it. If it is late, switch to your second plan. Write the letter.
Tuesday 27 to Wednesday 28 OctoberWrap the gift and hide it. Confirm the plan for moonrise. Book mehndi if she wants it and a slot is still free.
Thursday 29 OctoberBe home early. Give the gift after she has seen the moon and eaten.

What you can do on the day, beyond a gift

The afternoon is usually the hardest stretch of a fast, with the hunger loudest and the evening still hours away. Whoever is beside her then matters more than any object.

  • Be home early. Leave the office in time to be there before she starts getting dressed, not after the puja has begun.
  • Sort the moonrise plan. Know the time, know which terrace or balcony has a clear view, and keep a plan B if the sky is cloudy. Moon apps and a quick call to a friend in the same city help.
  • Keep her company. Sit with her in the afternoon, keep the television low and the talk light. She does not need entertaining, only company.
  • Take the small jobs off her. Phone calls from relatives, the guests' tea and the door can be yours.
  • Have water and something light ready for the moment the fast is broken, so she is not waiting for someone to find a glass.

Gifts that mark a first year

A first Karwa Chauth gift works best when it records the year as well as the day. Each of these carries a date, a photo or a message. They are different from the budget-sorted picks in our other Karwa Chauth post, and none of them repeats its ideas. Budget bands below are for your planning only.

A keychain that carries the date

Under ₹500 is a sensible budget to plan around. Put 29.10.2026 on it, or the date of the wedding, with her name or a short word on the other side. It rides in her bag every day, which suits a first year, when everything else is still being arranged. We make keychains, and a design is shown for your approval before a personalised piece is made.

A frame that says Our first Karwa Chauth

Plan on ₹500 to ₹1,000. Choose one photo, ideally from the wedding or the first weeks afterwards, and let the frame carry the words. It is a gift for the shelf in a home she is still making her own. We make frames and can add short wording to them.

A message to open next year

This one costs nothing. Write a letter on the night, seal it, and write on the envelope that it is to be opened on the next Karwa Chauth. Next year you will both read what you wrote at the start. If you do it together, each writing a page and swapping envelopes, it becomes a small ritual of its own.

An everlasting bouquet to keep

Plan on ₹500 to ₹1,000, or more for a larger one. A ribbon or fabric rose bouquet does not wilt, so it can stand on the dresser well beyond the evening. Pair it with a handwritten tag that has the date on it. We make everlasting flowers and bouquets.

A wall clock for the room you share

Above ₹1,000 is a fair planning figure. Both names and the wedding date on the dial, in a colour that suits your room, make a clock that is useful from the first day. It is a good choice when you have just moved into a home of your own and nothing on the walls yet says it is yours. We make wall clocks.

How to give the gift

Timing matters as much as the object. A gift pushed into her hands at five in the afternoon, when she is hungry and getting ready, lands badly. Wait until the moon has been seen, the fast is broken and she has eaten something.

  1. Wait until she has eaten. Water first, then food. Then the gift.
  2. Choose a quiet corner. Not in front of every relative, unless she would enjoy that. Many new brides are shy on the first one.
  3. Give the letter first, and let her read it. Then give the gift, so the words arrive before the object.
  4. Say one sentence out loud. It does not need to be long. Something true about the year.

If you are apart on the day

Many couples are in different cities on a first Karwa Chauth, and some of them in different countries. It is hard, but it is manageable. The fast and the gift can both reach her, and the moon is the same moon.

  • Send the gift to arrive a few days early, to an address where someone will be home, and ask that it be kept sealed until the evening.
  • Check the moonrise time for her city, not yours, and book the video call for that moment.
  • Test the call the evening before, and keep a second way to reach each other in case the first fails.
  • Ask a friend or a sibling in her city to be there, so she is not alone at moonrise.
  • Send the letter by post or ask the courier to carry it with the gift, so she holds something in your handwriting.

Where to look next

If you would rather browse than plan from scratch, our personalised gifts shelf shows what can carry a name or a date. For smaller budgets, look at gifts under ₹500 or gifts under ₹1,000. With little time, our last-minute gift ideas are a good place to start.

Questions people ask

What should I gift my wife on her first Karwa Chauth?

Choose something personal that marks the year: a keychain or frame carrying the date, a printed wedding photo, an everlasting bouquet or a handwritten letter. Her parents and yours often send clothes and sweets, so your gift is the one that can be about the two of you.

When is Karwa Chauth in 2026?

Drik Panchang for New Delhi lists Karwa Chauth 2026 on Thursday 29 October. Panchangs can differ by a day, a few show the 28th, and moonrise differs by city, so check the panchang for your own city before you plan the day.

What is sargi, and who sends it?

Sargi is the meal eaten before sunrise at the start of the fast. In many families it is prepared or sent by the mother-in-law and includes fruit, sweets, dry fruits and snacks. Customs differ between families and regions.

Do the bride's parents send gifts on the first Karwa Chauth?

In many families they do, often a basket of clothes, sweets and other items called baya, which she may share with the elders after the evening puja. Some families send less or skip it. Ask your family what to expect rather than assume.

Can I still order a personalised gift with 12 days to go?

Possibly, but we cannot promise it. A personalised piece usually needs about two weeks, and we do not promise a turnaround. Message us on WhatsApp with what you want and the date, and we will tell you what can be ready. Otherwise, choose something not personalised.

When should a husband give the gift on Karwa Chauth?

After she has seen the moon, broken her fast and eaten something. Giving it earlier, while she is hungry and getting ready, often goes badly. If the house is full of guests, the next morning is also fine.

Not sure what can be ready for 29 October?

Tell us on WhatsApp what you have in mind and the date. We will say what is possible in the time, with no promise, and anything personalised is approved by you as a design first. Or browse what can carry a name or a date.
