A planner for the person who has to choose Diwali gifts for a whole team. What suits each per-person budget, how to make a modest gift feel considered, and how to budget, send and keep it fair.

Part of our guide: Festival Gifting Calendar for India 2026–27: Dates and Deadlines

The short answer

  • Fix the per-person amount first, then choose the kind of gift. Around ₹200 suits one small useful thing, ₹500 one good thing with a name, ₹1,000 a keepsake, and ₹2,000 a larger piece or a small set.
  • A handwritten note from the owner, the person's own name and matching presentation make a modest gift feel chosen, and they cost far less than a bigger gift.
  • Team budget: headcount times the per-head amount, plus 10 per cent spare, plus a separate small pot for support staff.
  • Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026, 21 days from today. Personalised handmade pieces need about two weeks including a design proof, and large quantities may not be possible, so WhatsApp the studio early and keep a fallback ready.
  • Give everyone the same gift, explain any difference by role, and avoid alcohol, anything too personal, religious items for a mixed team, and food without asking about allergies and diet.

If you have been asked to sort out a Diwali gift for employees, the hard part is rarely the idea. It is the arithmetic, the fairness question, the address list and the calendar, all at once, with a manager asking whether it is done. This guide is written for that job.

We go through four per-person budgets, ₹200, ₹500, ₹1,000 and ₹2,000, and say what kind of gift suits each. Then we cover team budgets, small and large teams, remote staff and what to avoid. Dates matter this year, so keep our festival gifting calendar for India open beside this page.

What should you give employees for Diwali?

One thing, chosen with care, that every person can use or keep, with their name on it or on the card. A thoughtful gift at a modest amount beats a bigger one that looks like it came out of a carton.

Read this first: how much time is left

Today is Sunday 18 October and Diwali is Sunday 8 November, which is 21 days away. Dhanteras is Friday 6 November, and many offices hand out gifts a few days before that, so your real deadline is earlier. Panchangs can differ by a day for some dates, so check your panchang before fixing a handover day.

Personalised handmade pieces need about two weeks, including the time to show you a design and have you approve it. The studio promises no turnaround, and a large quantity may not be possible this close to Diwali. If you want personalised pieces, message the studio on WhatsApp today with your quantity and the date you need them by, and ask what can be ready. Do not place an order and assume.

Start with the per-person budget

Gifts go wrong when the idea is chosen before the number. Someone falls for a hamper, and multiplied by sixty people it is a figure nobody approved. Agree the amount with whoever signs off the spend, and treat it as the full cost of one person's gift: the item, the wrapping and card, and delivery. Ask your accountant how employee gifts are treated before you finalise it.

The four bands below are your budget per person, not a price list from any shop. Use them to choose a kind of gift, then look at what actually fits today.

Around ₹200 a person: one small, useful thing

At this amount the gift is a gesture, and it should be honest about that. The mistake is to stretch it into a mock hamper full of filler. Choose one item people will use, and do it neatly.

  • A good pen or small notebook from a local stationer, with the person's name written inside by hand.
  • A set of diyas or tea-lights from a local market, wrapped in matching paper.
  • A small box of sweets or dry fruits from a shop you trust, but only after asking about allergies and diet.
  • A small potted plant from a local nursery, if people have homes where it can live.

These are ideas from local shops, not from the studio. At this band the personal touch carries the gift: a card in the owner's handwriting with one specific line of thanks per person takes a few minutes each and makes a small gift read as a decision, not an obligation. If you want an item with a name on it, see what fits today on products under ₹500.

Around ₹500 a person: one good thing with a name

This is the most common corporate budget. It is usually enough for one properly made item with a name or initials, and not enough for a hamper worth giving. Our detailed list for this band sits in Diwali corporate gifts under ₹500, so we will not repeat it.

What we will add is how to choose. Pick something that suits every role, from the person on the shop floor to the person in the cabin. A name keychain or a handkerchief with initials suits almost everyone. A cap suits a casual office and may not suit a formal one.

Around ₹1,000 a person: a keepsake

Here you are no longer giving a token. You can give something people display or use for years, which suits long-serving staff, a smaller team, or an owner who wants the gift remembered. Use the amount on one considered item, not a collection of small ones.

  • A frame with a short line or the team's name, for a desk or a shelf at home.
  • A wall clock or a piece of small décor with a name or a year on it.
  • A bouquet of everlasting flowers, which needs no care over the holiday.
  • A custom T-shirt or cap, if your team has a casual culture and would really wear it.

These are the kinds of things the studio makes, personalised with a name, a date or a short word, and a design is shown for your approval before a personalised piece is made. What fits ₹1,000 depends on the item and the quantity, so look at products under ₹1,000 and personalised gifts.

Around ₹2,000 a person: a larger piece or a small set

At ₹2,000 you can afford two good things together, or one larger piece. The risk changes too: a generic gift feels worse here than at ₹200, because people expect it to reflect something about them.

A set works well: a keepsake with the person's name, paired with a handwritten note and tidy packaging. Or choose one larger item, such as a frame or wall clock, and keep the rest for wrapping and delivery. Quantity is where this band gets difficult. Larger pieces take longer to make and pack, so if you need fifty at this level, message the studio on WhatsApp now and ask plainly what can be ready for your quantity and date.

How to make a modest gift feel considered

  • A name. Use the name the person goes by at work, spelt their way, from a list HR has confirmed and not from memory.
  • A handwritten note from the owner or manager. Two lines are enough. Mention one real thing from the year, and do not copy the same line onto every card.
  • Matching presentation. One paper, one ribbon, one tag style. A row of identical neat parcels looks planned, and a mixed pile does not.
  • A handover in person. Say thank you in a sentence. A gift left on a desk with no word from anyone loses much of its point.

How to plan the budget for the whole team

For clients and events beyond the team, see our guide to handcrafted corporate gifts in India and the corporate gifting page.

  1. Headcount times per-head amount. Use the confirmed number on the payroll at Diwali, including anyone who joined this month.
  2. Plus 10 per cent spare. It covers a misspelt name, a damaged parcel, a late joiner and the colleague you forgot.
  3. Plus a separate small pot for support staff. Security guards, housekeeping, drivers and pantry staff keep the office running and are not on your team list. Keep their money separate so it is not squeezed when the main budget is tight.

A team under 10, and a team of 50 or more

Teams under 10

A small team can afford to be personal. You can choose a different item for each person if you know them well, write every note by hand and hand each gift over yourself. The risk is that small differences are noticed and discussed, so keep the amount equal even if the item changes.

Teams of 50 or more

At scale the enemies are inconsistency and time. Choose one gift and one design for everyone, put names on a card or tag if the item cannot carry them, and ask early what is possible for your quantity. Keep one person in charge of the name and address lists and have a second person check both. One wrong letter or missing flat number in a large list creates a week of follow-up.

Employees who work from home or in another city

The studio ships by courier within India, as would any shop you order from. A few steps decide whether a remote gift arrives well.

  • Collect addresses early. Ask this week for a full home address, pin code and a phone number the courier can call, and whether someone will be home to receive it.
  • Check the list. Have a second person read it against the replies. Addresses typed from memory are a common cause of returned parcels.
  • Send remote parcels first. Courier timing slips around the festival, so dispatch well before the office handover.
  • Include the note. Remote staff miss the handover and the thank-you, so a handwritten card in the parcel matters more for them.

Do not promise anyone a delivery day until the courier has confirmed it. Tell them it is on its way and share the date when you have it.

Keeping it fair

Gift comparisons travel through an office quickly. The simplest policy is the best: everyone gets the same gift, whatever their role or tenure, with a name on it.

If you do differ by role, make a rule you can explain in a sentence and apply it to everyone. 'Everyone gets the same gift, and people with five years of service or more get an additional keepsake' is a rule. 'Some people got a bigger one because we like them' is a problem. Tell the team the rule before the gifts go out.

What to avoid

  • Alcohol. Many people do not drink, and for some it is a health or religious matter.
  • Cash or cash-like gifts without a note. Handed over bare they feel like pay, not a gift. If you use them, write a real note.
  • Anything too personal. Perfume, clothing sizes, skincare and jewellery depend on taste, size and skin.
  • Food without checking. Ask about nut allergies, diabetes, vegetarian, vegan and Jain eating, and fasting. Where you cannot ask, choose a non-food gift.
  • Religious items for a mixed team. An idol or puja item is welcome in many homes and not in others.

A timeline from today to Diwali

These are planning dates, not promises. Check your panchang, as dates can differ by a day.

A working plan for Diwali 2026 (Dhanteras Friday 6 November, Diwali Sunday 8 November)
WhenWhat to do
18 to 19 OctoberFix the amount, headcount and support staff list. WhatsApp the studio with your quantity and date.
20 to 22 OctoberChoose the gift, confirm names, send the address request. Arrange a fallback if the studio cannot take your quantity.
As soon as you hear backApprove the design proof for any personalised piece. Check every name and address again.
Late OctoberWrite the notes while you wait for parcels. Check the count against your list when they arrive.
2 to 5 NovemberHand over gifts in the office, including to support staff.
6 NovemberDhanteras. A buffer for late parcels, not a plan.

There is little slack here. The studio promises no turnaround, so ask on WhatsApp what is realistic for your quantity before you rely on any date.

A short checklist

  1. Per-person amount approved, with wrapping and delivery included.
  2. Team budget: headcount times amount, plus 10 per cent, plus the support staff pot.
  3. One name list and one address list, each checked by a second person.
  4. WhatsApp message sent asking what can be ready for your quantity and date.
  5. A fallback gift that needs no personalising.
  6. Allergies and diet asked about if any food is involved.
  7. A handwritten note for every person, including remote and support staff.
  8. The fairness rule written in one sentence.
  9. Handover day set, with a buffer before the office closes.
  10. Your accountant asked how employee gifts are treated.

Questions people ask

What is a good Diwali gift for employees under ₹200?

One small useful thing, such as a good pen, a notebook, a set of diyas or a potted plant from a local shop, with the effort put into presentation and a handwritten note. At this amount the note matters more than the item.

How much should a company spend on Diwali gifts per employee?

There is no right figure. Choose an amount you can give every year without strain and that the person approving the spend is comfortable with. Ask your accountant how employee gifts are treated before you fix it.

Should everyone on the team get the same gift?

Yes, as a default. If you want to recognise service or seniority, set a rule you can explain in one sentence, apply it to everyone, and tell the team before the gifts go out.

How do I send Diwali gifts to employees who work from home?

Collect full home addresses and phone numbers a few weeks ahead, check the list with a second person, and dispatch remote parcels first. Include a handwritten note, and do not promise a delivery date until the courier confirms one.

Is there still time to order personalised Diwali gifts for a team?

Possibly for a small team, but we cannot promise it. Personalised handmade pieces need about two weeks including the design proof, and large quantities may not be possible before Diwali on 8 November. WhatsApp the studio now with your quantity and date, and keep a fallback ready.

What should I not give employees for Diwali?

Avoid alcohol, anything too personal, religious items for a mixed team, and food unless you have asked about allergies and diet. Cash or vouchers without a note can feel like pay and not a gift.

Can the studio do GST invoices, bulk pricing or logos for a team order?

We cannot say here. Ask on WhatsApp what the studio can do for your quantity and date, including any invoice or printing you need, before you place an order.

Planning a team gift this Diwali?

Tell the studio how many people you are buying for and the date you need the gifts. Its answer on what can be ready should come before you pick a design.
